ITD 1013 Fundamentals of Information Technology Grade ___95____ Instructor: F. Guinn Student Name: Beverly Parker Due Date: March 31, 2013 New Technology in Third World Countries New technology is emerging on almost a daily basis. Many third world countries struggle with keeping up with advances in most aspects of technology. In this paper I will explain who invented a device called the Leveraged Freedom Chair, where the wheelchair is most used and why it is a great new technology. People with disabilities in undeveloped countries greatly benefit from this new technology. The chair is also very cost effective. Amos Winter, Ph.D., is the primary inventor of the Leveraged Freedom Chair (LFC). Dr. Dr. Winters graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts and earned his Ph. D, from MIT. Dr. Winters joined the faculty in mechanical engineering at MIT in 2012. Dr. Winter lives in New Delhi, India. His inspiration to build the wheelchair came from a summer spent talking to wheelchair users and disability groups in Tanzania. The wheelchair is designed specifically for going long distances over rough terrain in developing countries. The wheelchair is small enough to use indoors. Dr. Winters also enjoys running, playing squash, snowboarding, and taking apart/fixing machines (tuftsalumni.org). The Leveraged Freedom Chair offers unparalleled mobility for people with disabilities in developing countries (http://globalchallenge.mit.edu/teams/view/11). The chair is made from bicycle parts. It can be built, fixed and ridden anywhere. The chair is also very inexpensive. Wheelchair users in developing countries often need chairs that work on rough roads. Most people cannot afford other gear-shifting designs. The LFC is a mere one hundred dollars to two hundred dollars to build. The low cost of the chair makes it
