The two were discriminated because the suspects thought that they were gay or assumed it. I feel a person should not assaulted or killed because of the lifestyle they live. In “ Because That’s What We Do to Faggots,” Wilchins explains to the reader about two assaults on homosexuals that never hit mainstream. The first story was a man named Alexander Gray, who resided in Washington D.C. On June 9, Gray was battered by three or four men with a shovel while they yelled
For example, a male wanting to dress and act like a female but at the same time having a sexual relationship with a male. It is true that individuals do become homosexual or anything along those lines due to hate, anger, and violence but also because of natural causes like something happening in the womb during development or the child having a sibling that is the opposite sex than them and they pick up their type of behavior whether it is a boy or a girl. On the other hand, homosexuals are often made fun of by the heterosexuals. An explanation for heterosexuals’ behavior towards homosexuals is mainly because it is out of the norm and for people who are strongly religious; the bible doesn’t state anything along the lines of being homosexual. Males typically have more of a hard time with society when they are homosexual than females.
The fear of an aggressor “outing” their victim varies between lesbian and gay couples (Messinger, 2011, p.2233). Lesbian victims are much more likely to call the police in a battering case than gay men. A possible theory for this occurrence would be that society has socially constructed the belief that it is much more acceptable for a women to come out as a homosexual than a man. To protect
Running Head: AFRICAN AMERICAN HETEROSEXUAL WOMEN AND HIV/AIDS: ADDRESSING STIGMA AND BETRAYAL African American Heterosexual Woman and HIV/AIDS: Addressing Stigma and Betrayal Abstract The HIV/AIDS epidemic has been around for the last twenty years. In the beginning in America, those most affected by HIV/AIDS were gay white men and intravenous drug users. But the populations affected by the disease have expanded to include Black men and women. Consider that the number of African American women infected through heterosexual sex is the largest growing infected population and that the numbers are rising disproportionately. Many factors account for this, the main one being betrayal from the men in their lives who engage in sexual
and 2003, the overall rate in Nevada With 19.1 suicides per 100,000 residents in 2000, Nevada rate was almost twice the National average of 10.7. Between 1993 and 2003, the overall rate in Nevada steadily declined from 25.8 to 18.5, but remained about twice the national
According to a survey held by the Human Rights Campaign in 2010, 92% of homosexuals who participated claimed that they were victims of verbal abuse or anti-gay threats, and 24% reported physical attacks towards them. Also, in 2009, the number of hate crimes against gays showed that there was a 7% increase nationwide. Unfortunately, two years later, the statistics have only gotten larger in numbers, showing a 10% increase from the same survey conducted. This may be because of the Anti-Gay Industry that is made up of many politicians and religious groups in the U.S. who possess beliefs that being a homosexual is a sin against God himself. This very same group encourages the actions of anti-gay hate crimes and urges incomprehensible violence towards gays solely to support their beliefs and for their own profit.
They also believed that a gay person is committing a sin and would burn in hell for having a sexual experience with a person of the same sex. (Rathus, Nevid & Fichner-Rathus, 2005) Until recently, some religions would perceive the male on male and female on female sexual interaction as inappropriate. Then, consider the cross cultural viewpoints and according to the text, it appears that there are some cultures that are more accepting to this. The New Guinea is one of the cultures that are more excepting to the view of homosexuality. In this culture the young
The rate of violent sexual crime has increased 64 percent since 2006 according to US Army report, which noted that “rape, sexual sodomy were the most frequent violent sex crimes committed in 2011” (Pentagon Report: Sexual Assault in the Military up Dramatically). According to the Department of Defense 2009 fiscal year, 3230 women and men reported sexual assault. They also admit that 80% of sexual assault survivors do not report the crime (The Invisible War). It is an extraordinary number if we try to do the math and find out how many people that have been victim of sexual assault in the military. In 1991 Congress reported that 200,000 women soldiers were victims of sexual assault so far in the US Army.
The research also extends the concept of the “double closet” in which the participants actually felt more conformable with their identity as homosexual males versus wealthy males (Hokemeyer, 2009). It would be interesting to find out if Low-SES homosexual males also identify more with being homosexual or being poor. Does being homosexual keep them from achieving all of their goals emotionally, personally and professionally? As is well known, problem of violence against homosexuals is so pervasive that they were a specifically identified group when the United States Congress ordered
Some of these include that if you are around them you will catch a disease, because they are gay they will automatically be attracted to you, and “it’s just a phase of their lives, they’ll grow out of it if you make them”. All of these are completely false and only cause bigotry in our society. This bigotry leads to hate crimes against these people. The FBI reported that there has been an 11% increase in hate crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity just within the last two years. This could be prevented by states alone if they had substantial laws against them, but even Alabama’s laws addressing hate crimes do not include crimes based on sexual orientation.
