Vulgar language routinely appears in programs and movies which is accessible to youth. It is realistic and believable to younger youth which can lead them to aggressiveness. As with our American youth viewing these ideas, these images are imposed on the viewers, especially the younger generation. There is a huge amount of younger children that sit and watch television for many hours. In doing that it will handicap their brains.
Since kids are also watch tv, parents have more concerns of the way there kids think about violence they see, read or hear. Also the media violence can affect people in many ways. Some people start having serious fears of them being victims in real life. However, there are researchers that say they have discovered that when they show violence on television it shows children to be not be so sensitive to pain and suffering of other people. Crime drama has become one of the most popular TV genres in our society, taking up almost 20% of prime time. People like these dramas because they deal with themes and issues that they know from news and current events. Also important as the themes and issues that the dramas deal with are the things the characters care about and the way they act.
The ideals that are portrayed through the media are, to me, the most pressing issues today. Through television, radio, magazines, and newspapers, negative messages are being presented to the world's youth. Though some of these media outlets are intended to raise awareness of some problems, most have the opposite effect. Bad behavior, poor body image, drug and alcohol use, lack of morals, and violence is becoming "normal" in society. I have seen, first hand, that high school students are becoming desensitized to things that are truly horrible.
The impact that the media in the United States has on the minds of the youth has changed into an increasingly dangerous issue. While the media has many positive influences there are still yet many negative behaviors exercised by many teenagers and young adults. Amongst these behaviors is the acceptance of how sex is ok amongst teenagers. The media has become a pool of promiscuity which has led to the spread of many STD’s including HIV and AIDS. This essay describes how the media has led to the rise in promiscuity and thus leading to the continuous growth of the HIV Pandemic giving other countries a reason to believe that the people in the United States have poor cultural values.
Now days, media portrays individuals in a way that makes teenagers conscious of their appearance and often brings their self esteem down. Not only the media, but teenagers themselves have a huge impact on other teens, causing them to have low self esteem. They feel the need to look and be “perfect” at all times. However, when they are unsuccessful in doing so, they become anxious and begin self harm. Self harm is deliberate attempt to harm the body and occurs when an individual is facing a displeasing feeling of fear and concern.
Tamela’s hostile aggressive tendencies are exhibited in her dress, her relation to people around her, and in some of her self-harm behavior. When she dressed provocatively to go out to sing she said that she loved to get attention. She even went as far to state that attention from men is “the only way you know you’re worth anything.” Due to her sexual abuse history and her terrible relationship with her father, Tamela did not trust or have many real relationships with men. She was angry with her parents and the person who abused her and she exhibited that anger by dressing in extremely comment-provoking clothing. Then, when people called her names or treated her like a prostitute, she would become extremely aggressive and yell and curse.
This gives young viewers an outlet to be like well they ended up on TV doing all the things we are not supposed to do. They are constantly fighting with one another when the original purpose of the show was to help them change their lives. They walk around half dressed and ready to fight. Instead of them pulling together and actually trying to change their behavior, it gets worse! The use of vulgar language is at an all-time high, and the level of self-respect is zero, and ratings are through the roof.
Television: A Distortion of Reality Television has become a false reality for millions of Americans and the majority of the global society. “The use of television to promote primarily materialistic values has become a severe, although largely unacknowledged, mental health and public health problem for the United States and the world” (Elgin 105). Duane Elgin speaks about the impact of television on the youth of our nation and how it is “being used to promote mindless consumerism around the planet” (Elgin 104). The negative effects of television are clear, and the reality is that this communication device is changing the important values of the global youth. The lucid shift in values has been from developing a meaningful philosophy in life to being well-off financially.
Making love, kissing scenes are shown boldly in the public through television, Internet and even magazines. Because of these, there are many unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and abortion cases nowadays. Everyone became numbed by the thought that since a lot of people are “tolerating” not just this particular issue, then maybe it’s okay. That’s the most triggering idea. Misleading youth to a wrong practice could influence the future generation to come.
In recent years, there has been growing concern over the possible influence of aggressive and sexually-explicit media on children and teenagers (Gore, 1987). The displays of graphic language, drug activity, sexual content and crime, has begun to cause an epidemic in adolescents. Whether it’s the music they listen to the video games they play or the television show they watch. Sexual activities and violence has become part of the adolescent lifestyle. The increase of these contents and the public ignorance to it has cause a problem in society.
