Negative Effects of Television A recent study showed by end of elementary school, children witness 8,000 murders on television and over 100,000 other acts of violence on television and by 18 they will have witnessed 16, 000 murders and 200,000 acts of violence. Shows like "CSI" show graphic scenes that have desensitized people. Basically, it is hard to shock anyone anymore. Those who say TV is not powerful enough to influence people and that children understand it is entertainment are kidding themselves. Television has a negative effect on humanity because it portrays so much violence, ruthlessness and immoral behavior. In the 50’s Television was really worth watching. There were all types of up-beat shows on like I Love Lucy, The Jackie Gleason Show, The Honeymooners, and Lassie. Theses show offered safe comedy and moral teachings. Television started to have a negative influence on life with more immoral shows and became not just occasional entertainment. The most recent examples are Sex and the City and Will and Grace, People started to believe in what they could see for themselves on television. Why do advertisers pay millions for a thirty second television spot? Because they know that Television influences our buying decisions, our taste in clothes and in food. Children will see that action figure and feel as if they need it. Some advertisers use songs and cartoons to grab the attention of children. Television puts a high value on ownership of things and not so much on spending time with family. Families gather around the television more than the table.
