Negative Effects of Lust, Gluttony, and Greed: And their Impact on American Society The seven deadly sins, or cardinal vices, are bad habits that have been used as tools since early Christian times to teach people about humanity's tendency to sin. They have been used to guide people about what not to do in pursuit of living a sin free life. These sins are: wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy, and gluttony. I will give compelling examples of three of these sins and their negative impact on the society of the people of the United States. Lust is usually thought of as an emotional force or desire of a sexual nature. The best example of lust’s negative effect on society is divorce due to adultery. It seems that people just don’t take commitment to anything, not just marriage, seriously any more. Just from married people that I have known in my life more than half have become divorced, mostly due to infidelity. Research shows that male infidelity accounts for over 75 percent of divorces. Women were to blame only 22 percent of the time. The Divorce rate has increased from approximately 500 per 100,000 marriages in the 1930s to over 11,000 per 100,000 in the year 2000! These rates are continuing to rise every year. It can be said that lust has changed the makeup of the American family by way of divorce. Two parent families have been shown to pass on strong values and sense of morality to their children. They family consisting of a mother, father, and 2.5 children are becoming a thing of the past. And with that the morals and values of the country as a whole will decline. Gluttony is the consumption and indulgence of mass amounts of anything to the point of waste. Americans as a whole are extremely wasteful. The best example of this is wasted food. Landfills in this country are filling up with wasted food which according to some estimates is up to 20
