For example, a teenager who has friends that are aggressive. That teenager can change his behaviour and come also aggressive due to the environment influences that he is around nearly everyday of the individual’s life. There are debates that argue that people are shaped by biology and genetics. The nurture that if it is the social, economic or environmental influences around a person that makes them a certain way, such as life experience. Some say that social life is the most important factor in determining who are and how we behave. The nature or nurture debate is concerned the with the contributions of genetic inheritance, and environmental factors to human development.
Journal Responses #4 In his essay, ‘What Is A Homosexual,’ Andrew Sullivan accomplishes an in depth insight to the meaning and effects of homosexuality on an individual’s lifestyle by providing an analysis of his own past experiences as well as observations of the behaviors of other homosexuals. As humans, we are prone to making assumptions about those who are different than us, and in order to avoid rejection or alienation, many are forced to hide who they are in favor of risking the acceptance of their peers--as Sullivan describes, “there is something masculine and respected in the discipline of the arts and especially in the sciences. You can gain respect and still be different.” (156) Unfortunately, by covering the truth to dodge the disapproval of others, Sullivan notes that the results only end up causing self-loathing. What I appreciated about this essay was Sullivan’s delivery of an equally personal as well as
Deviant behaviors are those behaviors that society considers to be bad, evil, sinful, criminal, insane, or even rude. Deviance is likely to produce some social efforts to punish and or control the deviant individual (sanctions). Deviance can be divided into categories along sexual lines which is to say that there are norms, social codes, standards, and moral codes for sexual behavior. Violation of the norms, social codes, standards and moral codes set up for heterosexuals are said to consist of “heterosexual deviant behaviors” or “heterosexual deviance. Several examples of heterosexual deviance include: teen sex, extramarital sex, pornography, cybersex, sexual harassment, and prostitution.
Nature vs. Nurture Your eye color, straight or curly hair, height and pigment of skin are all inherited and a part of our genes. However is the way we act? The question of “are we born bad or made bad” has caused quite a controversy for years. Researchers have been studying if it is nature or nurture that makes us who we are. In other words, are we born to be a certain way or are we shaped by external influences such as parents, friends, and social expectations.

Nature vs. Nurture Over the years, there has been a lot of controversy on whether or not genes that we inherit affect us and how we live, or if it is the environment that we have been raised in. There are many different reasons for why one is more correct than that other. But, all of the reasons can be backed up with very good evidence and reasoning. Personality, development, intelligence, behavior and ability to do certain things make us the individuals that we are. But what influences those things?
Why Are People Heterosexual When There Are So Many Verbal Misinterpretations between Men and Women? Homosexuality and heterosexuality (American Psychological Association, 2008) Sexual orientation refers to an enduring pattern of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attractions to men, women, or both sexes. Sexual orientation also refers to a person’s sense of identity based on those attractions, related behaviors, and membership in a community of others who share those attractions. Sexual orientation is distinct from other components of sex and gender, including biological sex (the anatomical, physiological, and genetic characteristics associated with being male or female), gender identity (the psychological sense of being male or female), and social gender role (the cultural norms that define feminine and masculine behavior). According to the above definition of sexual orientation, homosexuality is the emotional, romantic or sexual attraction or behavior between members of the same sex or gender; and heterosexuality is the emotional, romantic or sexual attraction or behavior between persons of opposite sex or gender.
In DSM-III-R, this last category had disappeared, but one of ‘sexual disorder not otherwise specified’, with ‘persistant and marked distress about one’s sexual orientation’ was inserted. Even today, many people still view homosexuality as an aberrant mental state. The importance of the cultural context can be seen if we return to the six features of abnormality proposed by Rosenhan and Seligman in failure to
