Week 2 DB: Nature vs. Nurture Under Learning Goal 4 on page 46, there are five sub-topics. After studying these throughout the chapter, do you think that saying "nature vs. nurture" is too simplistic? Why or why not, i.e. you must include some research and/or readings in the text in support of your position. Please respond to the comment of one student using his/her name which is part of online "netiquette." (Ten points) Why are we the way we are? How did we end up thinking the way we do, enjoying the things we enjoy, succeeding and struggling in the areas we do? Are we a product of our environment or are we a product of our predetermined genetic code? All of these questions are what have sparked and continue to fuel the nature vs. nurture debate. According to our text, nature vs. nurture asks, “Is it possible to untangle the influences of heredity from the environment and discover the role of each in producing individual differences in development? When heredity and environment interact, how does heredity influence the environment and vice versa?” (Santrock 64) There are many fields of thought and opinions on this great debate. In my opinion it should be nature AND nurture, not nature VERSUS nurture. I believe we are the sum of all parts and not one or the other. I think that, as humans, we become who we are because of a combination of our genetics and our environment. I believe that the two elements are interdependent and can influence one another greatly. That being said, I tend to really follow the same line of thought as what is expressed in the Epigenetic View. The Epigenetic View was first introduced in 2007 by Gilbert Gottlieb. Gottlieb’s Epigenetic View “emphasizes that development is the result of an ongoing, bidirectional interchange between heredity and environment” (Santrock 67).
