Unit 4 - Development through the life stages M1, D1 Discuss the nature-nurture debate in relation to the development of an individual (M1) In this debate, I will be discussing the nature - nurture of an individual who is still developing. This debate has been an issue for many years. What is the meaning of ‘Nature’? ‘’The basic or inherent features, character, or qualities of something.’’ from the ‘Oxford dictionaries’ For example, a child inherits the mothers eye colour and the fathers hair texture. There are debate argue that people are shaped by biology and genetic such as eye colour.
These biological factors are said to determine an individual’s development and characteristics . the ability to speak a first language are thought to be due to an in progress genetic inheritance. Genes provide the instructions for structuring amino acids which in turn influence the proteins within our body cells. Genes process the chemical basis of our biology. Depending on the genes we inherit and the environmental influences we are exposed to, we will act apon a situation differently.
Running Head: NATURE VS. NURTURE-THE GREAT DEBATE 1 Nature vs. Nurture: The Great Debate Jeffery Gray, RN Western Governors University September 2014 NATURE VS. NURTURE: THE GREATE DEBATE 2 Abstract Describe the basic elements of the nature-nurture controversy. There are two different rationales for the origin, cause, or source of human behavior. Researchers and Scientists alike suggest that behavior is either the result of nature or nurture. Nature suggests that human behavior is the result of a genetic disposition, in other words, an individual’s behavior exists at birth, it is innate, they are born with the behavior inside of them. However, nurture suggests that an individual’s behavior is learned, it is the result or by-product of the environment in which the individual was reared or existed.
Our environment shapes how our genes affect us though. Genes work in mysterious ways and we may not enjoy what the give to us. Good or bad, genes are what turn on nurture so our environment can shape who we are, how we behave, and possibly who we love. Ridley certainly backs his theories with much evidence and this book strongly displays his opinion of how nature brings about nurture. From the text, I gathered that Ridley wrote The Agile Gene from a biological perspective of psychology.
Nature in terms of health and social care defines as the qualities we are born with that makes us what we are. Nurture defines as how we are influenced as a child by the environment around us, including other people. Many scientists, philosophers and researches argue that individuals’ personalities and talents come from their DNA and many others argue that the majority of it is influenced by life experiences and the environment. There have been studies involving identical and fraternal twins to find out if it is the genetics (nature) or environment (nurture), which was the effective one on the case of personality development. Which side of the debate is more influential?
He asserts that no one worldview contains all of the answers to life- not his naturalist view or natural selection’s Darwinism. However, he does objectively state that his naturalist worldview is better than the existing worldviews. While Graffin seems somewhat open-minded, he does a poor job of shielding the reader from his condescending tone while delivering this
For the past yeast several years the debate over nature vs. nurture have been strongly discussed. Theory of nature vs. nurture simply tells us that there are different types of influences in our life that makes us who we are. Nature determines our personality, genes and heredity characteristics that is passed on from one generation to the next. Our heredity and genes determines our features that is inherited from our great ancestors, it has long been known that certain physical characteristics are biologically determined by genetic inheritance. Color of eyes, straight or curly hair, pigmentation of the skin and certain diseases (such as Huntingdon’s chorea) are all a function of the genes we inherit.
He says that “evolution (…) can only be doubted by those who are ignorant of the evidence or are resistant to the evidence. (…) By contrast, the mechanisms that bring evolution about certainly need study and clarification.” Another biologist and geneticist quoted in Moran’s piece is R.C. Lewis. This man has written many papers on the subject of evolution and completely agrees with Moran’s thesis. These are just a few of the credible scientists Laurence Moran utilizes in his essay in order to prove that evolution is indeed a fact.
Personality psychologists claimed that one of the most profound challenges is to account for personality development, that’s why they put this into a study whether an individual’s behavior are caused by heredity or the environment, this study is known as the “nature” and “nurture”. First, the nature suggests that human behavior is driven mostly by biology (evolution, genetics, brain chemistry, and hormones). In contrast, the nurture suggests that behavior is driven mostly by psychosocial environment (for example, how we were raised, our peers, the situations we are in at present). Both nature and nurture contribute to who an individual is, but to better comprehend the nature versus nurture debate, we should look at the essential characteristics that make up this controversy. Humans are unique and highly-intricate creatures.
God’s Existence Bigfoot and the Lockness Monster is a couple of myths that humans have yet to prove or disprove existence. Humans argue back and forth desperately trying to prove their existence even if it means creating false evidence. The same can be said about the existence of God. God’s existence however is in a much higher level and has been argued by man for countless years. There are quite a few arguments to prove his existence and to disprove it in the Philosophical Traditions a Text with Readings, by Louis P. Pojman, also arguments taught in class.
