Katrina Green March 19, 2012 Professor Jennifer Koslo HW205-01 Unit 7 Project Holy Basil (Tulsi) which originated in Asia has been cultivated for over 5,000 years in Iran and India. It does not only have health benefits, but spiritual benefits. Holy Basil has been used by the Greeks to create holy water, and for Europeans, Indians, and Egyptians it was used to help souls to cross over. (Earhart, 2009) Holy Basil is a member of the mint family, and scientific name is, Ocimum basilicum or Ocimum sanctum. Basil allow has a number of health benefits, and is used as an antiseptic, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory. It is used to treat ulcers, insect bites, anxiety, and coughs. Holy Basil is most commonly known to treat is anxiety by lowering the cortisol levels which is the hormone that causes the body’s flight or fight response, and some studies helping lowering blood sugar levels. (Earhart, 2009) The Mosby book (2010) recommended dosage of this is 2.5g in ½ cup of water, strained daily or bid. It can be the fresh or dry leaves of the plant. (Skidmore-Roth, 2010, pp. 50-51) I grow the non-standardized holy basil leaves, and use them fresh to boil them as tea. This is only during the summer months it is a warm weather annual, and usually I made it only twice a week with 1/8 of a cup of fresh leaves to 8oz of boiling water for eight minutes. I would let it set for three minutes then strain the leaves. It is grown with soil only from my yard. There is a standardized products that I have used one being Organic India Tulsi Tea, and it is stamped USDA Organic. The organic blends contains organic rama tulsi, organic krishna tulsi, organic vana tusli, organic rooibos, and organic chamomile that measures to 1.9g per tea bag. The directions are one tea bag per 8oz of boiling watering, and let it infuse for three minutes. It does not give any requirements
