‘The Singapore national Identity is created by the state.’ Do you agree with the statement? Explain your answer. National identity is the person's identity and sense of belonging to one state or to one nation, a feeling one shares with a group of people, regardless of one's citizenship status. National identities are crucial to all nations as they help unite the people and civilians together in times of crisis when the safety and interests of their nation and people are at stake. National Identities are also essential in peacetime to accomplish a more bonded and united society. Some national identities are made deliberately by governments with a purpose and desire in mind, in order to develop and boost the morale and unity among the people. By implementing specific policies and plans, the government can slowly establish a National identity that brings the people together as it is common platform for them. Other National Identities are evolved naturally from the people, through mutual experiences and activities the people see and do every day, they naturally develop to become something the people can easily identify and have experienced .To ‘create’ is to cause something to happen as a result of one's actions with a purpose in mind. In my opinion, the national identity is not created by the state but in fact, evolved naturally from the people themselves. If you see it in another perspective, the government consist of Singaporeans like us, but only stronger and more powerful ones. The state is the actual one that can actually make a difference and allow the implementations to be carried out successfully. It is indeed true that the state have carried out their own implementations to help ‘develop’ a Singaporean National Identity, an identity which would unite us as one nation, one Singapore.
