Mythology and Modern Society In modern society, we do not have a general myth about our Universe and our connection to it. At least a myth that isn’t religious or is selective to only one group. There is no Universal belief about the start of the Universe, and only a select few communities have developed their own mythologies about the giant world we live in today. A myth must develop from within a community, and cannot be placed or implemented but rather accepted widely and brings every person in society into the story. This is our Universal Goal. When I say a myth, I define it in Campbell’s terms as he states on page thirty-four, “… the highest-order explanations, the stories that the people of any culture, at any time including today, communally believe and use to explain the larger reality, including their own place in it…but your own myths bring you and your family into the story.” The keyword in this passage is the larger reality. Jesus, Moses, God, Flying Spaghetti Monster, the Universe; whatever ‘greater power’ it is, it can be defined as the larger reality. It is interesting to see how the author addresses the Universe and the world we live in as different things, and how the over-all goal as a planet should be to achieve a Universal mindset. In today’s modern mythological world, we as humans do not YET have a universal ideology or belief that is not religious or only for a selected small group of people. But, religion has always been founded upon mythological beliefs. The story of Jesus follows the usual progression of the Hero’s journey. It is very interesting to see that most monotheistic religions like Christianity all have “prophets” that basically do the same as Hercules did. People are so attracted to religion because one can go to church and pray, and to celebrate holidays in which other believers congregate; you can participate in it. We need to
