Mysterious Disappearance of the Mayans

“Mysterious disappearance of the Mayans” Jennifer Johnson Professor Ralph Millsap World Cultures I Sunday May 5, 2013 It is said that no one can say for certain what happened to the Mayan people. But today there are theories and varied possible alternatives. Those theories and possible alternatives are said to be able to explain the abrupt and mysterious disappearance of the Mayan civilization. One theory that I came across, is also considered one of the largest theories concerning the disappearance of the Mayan civilization. The theory is of the occurrence of a mega-drought in the Central America region. Another one of the current theories that I found states that the Lowlands Maya basically wiped one another out. The theory that I find to me more convincing and more likely to have happened is the drought theory. According to what I read the Mayans relied heavily on rainwater. This was due to the fact that the areas in which they were located had no other freshwater sources in the areas. And from data collected from different tests done by Richard Gill and more by others as well shows that this 200 year drought occurred between 800 A.D. and 1000 A.D. Which according to our knowledge is when the disappearance of the Mayans occurred. Although we have many theories about the disappearance of the Mayan civilization I do not know if we will really ever truly know what really happened to them. Evidence may point us in the right direction but it may never truly tell us the whole story of what happened to the Mayan civilization.
