She does not teach her students like other teachers, but she has her own way to help her students gain more knowledge and some skills in their life. The three most important things in her teaching are letting her students teach each other, encouraging her students to work with others, and letting them know the importance of communication. First, while reading a Corla Hawkins story, I was so impressed with her teaching because she knows what is the most important of teaching method. She is not a teacher who only teaches her students in her class, but also gets students to teach each other. In her sentence, “The most important thing for me is that they teach each other” (33).
She taught them the importance of presenting oneself professionally. Friedman states, “I sit up straight just thinking about her.” He remembers her classroom as a place of learning not only about journalism, but also about life. Throughout the essay, Friedman writes about the lessons she taught her students. The fundamentals, as he calls it. Steinberg believed that to have a successful career and life, you must have the fundamentals right.
I found Educating Esme to be refreshing, honest, intelligent, quick witted, smart and logical. As I was reading the book there were times when my jaw literally dropped and I laughed out loud. Esme is the type of teacher who has so much back bone it might not be good for her; even though she is right most of the time. I was very comforted many times when reading this book for many reasons. Esme begins the book with the most prominent issue facing new teachers; discipline and classroom management.
Judy Jones was a teacher, then an administrator, and now, she is a principal at Greenleaf Elementary in Texas. While principal, Judy’s superintendent gave her one year to turn her failing school into an academically successful school. Judy used her previous skills as a teacher, and on the first day of school; she re-read The First Days of School, but this time, she read it from a principal’s perspective. Judy told her students and teachers to work and learn positively; and they should all have high expectations for others and themselves. She strongly believed in structure and procedure.
It is not easy for her because just like her, the students in her class all have their own life experiences and situations that they have had to overcome and still they are sitting in class trying to move on. She makes it her mission to help them and maybe help them finds way to overcome the scars that they have. Castellanos explains, “ I teach in a totally non-traditional way. I use every trick in the books: lots of positive reinforcement, both oral and written; lots of one-on-one conferences. I network women with each other, refer them to professor friends who can help them; connect them to graduate students and/or former students who are already pursuing careers” (pg 348).
National Honor Society By: Aleesta Clodfelter National Honor Society is having the characteristics of leadership, character, and service. I think that National Honor Society is the right thing for me because my parents have instilled in me a sense of responsibility and the care for others. This is such a formidable opportunity itself to be involved in due to the dedication of helping and caring for others, and being associated with multitudes of non- profit organizations. Leadership plays a huge role. I’ve always tried to show more of an independent role as a student, and help others who don’t quite understand the things that I do.
Working hard towards something that could change a life is exactly what she is doing. She has her head on straight and is looking forward to helping each and every student one step at a time. The many life lessons she endured has strengthened her, and she is taking that strength and using it for a good cause. h This year, math teacher Angela Munday began plans to re-establish a volunteer mentoring program that faded away years ago, for students at the high school. Munday, who is working to match volunteers with students in need, hopes to kick off the program May 1 so that it can continue through the summer.
For instance in her algebra class , when her teacher explains the way to solve the problem or what ever they may be learning that day she would understand it the first time she hears him explain it. She always wants to know something new. Jasmine is very sweet and she can get along with everyone that come in contact with her. She will also help anyone that needs help. She would try to help someone with there work even if she doesn't know how to do it.
I want to experiment with what builds a sense of community, support, care, and motivation in my classroom and I assume this will take place in many forms. Torey sought out and found ways to communicate and build relationships with her students, some of the time these ways were non-verbal and rather based on feeling; I hope to create the same sort of atmosphere in my classroom, to have those important one on one moments with my students. This passage in the book also reminded me of a recent conversation I had with my supervising teacher about the hiring process. She told me that some of the best teachers have the worst interviews, but when she’s looking for a potential teacher she relies mostly on intuition; if she believes an individual truly loves children, she is much more likely to hire them regardless of their interview. (Of course the individual would have to demonstrate some basic competencies) The passage also made me think of the beauty of the teaching profession and how it really is difficult to explain to a non-teacher; there are so many small and large events that happen on a daily basis in the academic world that creates a world of amazement and appreciation for the growing
The always do their best in every assignment that is give to them by the teachers. Sometimes they like to interrupt or add on to what the teacher had said or done. Teachers sometimes teachers ask them for information on a subject that the teachers themselves do not know anything about. I label them as teachers because they can practically teach the class sometimes. These types of students do there best to make them look good.
