The Civil Right Movement in the Deep South is one that is well known in history and familiar to us all. In the book My Soul is Rested by Howell Raines, details the story of sacrifice and courage that led to the changes needed. The struggle to end racial segregation started with the Montgomery Bus Boycott, there were many influential people along the way and the sit-ins that were held. My Soul is Rested is a powerful book of social and political history, as well as a wonderful tribute to those who made history happen. We have all heard of Rosa Parks, the black women who refused to give her seat up on the bus for a white man. As a result of that she was arrested and that sparked the Civil Rights Movement that started with the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The blacks of Montgomery decided that they would boycott the city buses until they could sit anywhere on the bus and not just have to give their seat up to a white person. The boycott demonstrated the potenial for nonviolent mass protest to successfully challenge racial segregation. For thirteen months they stayed off the bus, walked to work and school or obtained rides from others. They formed a taxi-like service and carpooled, for which the drivers were penalized for, they were shot at, jailed, fined and some had their homes bombed. Finally, after 391 days the boycott ended with the desegregation of the city buses. When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man, she didn’t fully realize the forces she had set into motion and the controversy that would soon follow.
They were ordinary men and women who just wanted to be treated equally. There was many influential people during the movement that inspired thousands to stand up for what was right and some even went on to be the first blacks elected to a position of power.
