My Son the Fanatic My Son the Fanatic takes place in London. It takes place in different locations in London. This story could easily have been a true story. It takes place in a poor part of London, the father is a cap driver and the mother is a housewife. The family is immigrants from Pakistan, so they aren’t in the top of the community. The father mostly works at night because the salary is better. The main character of My Son the Fanatic is Parvez. Parvez is a Pakistani immigrant. He grew up in Lahore where he first got his reluctance against religion. When Parvez was just a boy his Moulvi had attached a string to the ceiling and tied it to Parvez hair, to prevent him from falling asleep while studying the Koran. After that humiliation Parvez has avoided all kinds of religions. This is seen on page 197, line 34-44, where he doesn’t care that he is breaking the Koran’s rules Parvez is a taxi-driver and he usually works at night because the pay is better. The fact that he sleeps through the day means that he doesn’t experience much of Ali’s childhood. Parvez feels guilty of this and he is afraid that he is to blame for his son’s behavior. He is very insecure. He suspects that Ali is on drugs but can’t find anything in his room. Parvez has a hard time realizing that Ali just might have found his call in Islam. Parvez doesn’t believe that living after the Koran’s rules can be right for anyone because of his own experiences. Bettina is a person that Parvez really connects to. This is seen on page 195, line 1, where it is told that he can talk to Bettina about things he’d never be able to discuss with his wife. It is obvious that Parvez has a drinking problem, for example this on page 197 , line 21, where it says that even if Parvez knows he is getting drunk, he can’t stop himself.
