Broken family, forgotten children, forced donation. All connected by the heart wrenching film My Sister’s Keeper. Anna (Abigail Breslin), a genetically engineered baby, is the only perfectly matched donor for her leukemic sister Kate (Sofia Vassilieva). Anna, aged 11, reaches out for help from Campbell Alexander (Alec Baldwin), a 91% successful lawyer with a mysterious ‘helper dog’. But as the case thickens, forgotten Jesse (Evan Ellingson) connects with Kate moreso than her parents even realise. Sara Fitzgerald (Cameron Diaz) ignores the signs of defeat than Kate radiates in everything she does, but continues an obsessive campaign to save her life. Kate’s Father Brian (Jason Patric) leads a rather background role in Kate’s illness, trying to help Kate enjoy the life in which she can lead whilst her condition deteriorates. Though in the proceedings to the ball Kate goes to with the handsome Taylor Ambrose (Thomas Dekker) he glowingly states that Kate is as pretty as a picture. Cameron Diaz plays the role of Sara Fitzgerald with determination and innocence. She continuously fulfils the character expected throughout the proceedings, her battle with Kate’s leukaemia is thrown out of control when the case is delievered in Kate’s hospital room. The character perceived is a mother who loves her daughter as any mother would, but her vision is clouded when it comes to Anna and Jesse. Anna is in sight, but rather out of view as a result of being a donor. She is played with awe and the viewer is left with a sense of devotion and confusion. The plot, evident in the final scenes, are unknown by the majority of the characters, only Jesse and Kate in the know. But Jesse is left to deal with life by himself, no one realises his dyslexia and he is regularly shown to be out of the house, on his own.
