My Organs Could Be Your Organs In today’s world, we often think about all the shortages that are experienced around the world. When people think about shortages they immediately think of a shortage of food, clean water and proper medical care. After reading the article “The Meat Market” by Alex Tabarrok, it has come to my attention that most people overlook one of the largest shortages, human organs available for transplants. With all the medical advances today, it is more important than ever that people become educated on the importance of becoming organ donors. In brief, most organs available for transplant today come from donors who are declared brain dead and have identified themselves as organ donors. Even with 86 million people registered as organ donors, there is still an extreme shortage on organs that are needed by the millions of people who are currently waiting on transplant lists and this number is rising faster than organs can be harvested and transplanted. (Tabarrok 607) I believe the author was targeting young adults and middle aged people when he wrote this article to encourage them to become aware of the necessity for more people to become willing donors. His intention was to reach as large of an audience as possible to raise awareness of this increasing shortage. After reading the article, I feel that the author believes that a lack of information/education could be part of the shortage of organ donors. The shortage of organs available for transplants is not just a problem in the United States, it is global concern. Countries around the world have different policies for dealing with this shortage. Many countries are preparing to pay donors for their organ contributions while other countries have a policy where if you are not signed up to be a donor, you cannot be on a recipient list if you need a transplant.
