My One & Only Hero Melody Snow Ivy Tech Community College My One & Only Hero Growing up in the South of Alabama, to a single woman with twelve other children, a sixth grade education, working any type of jobs to make ends meet, and a strong faith in God and family is what made her an exceptionally strong, bold, and courageous woman. Born into the world on June 8, 1934, as Arrie Alazator Brown, was best known as “Ms. Lucy”. My mother married Arthur Snow, at the young age of fifteen and started having children shortly after marriage. Mama lost her husband and never married again, but she always encouraged her children to get married. So, with that being said all of her time, energy, and unconditional love went towards her children. My mother wore several hats during her lifetime, but determination and independency came to mind as I thought of her today. The strong willpower she had for education came from her having to quit school, get a job, and help her mom provide for her younger siblings. Going to school, graduating, and getting an education became the main priority for all the Snow children. Her fortitude towards education inspired the 50+ year old woman with limited knowledge to attend a Certified Nursing Assistant Program (CNA). Through health, family, and financial issues mom graduated the program at the top of her class and received the Certificate/License to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. All mother ever wanted for her children was a better life, education, and not have them to endure the struggles and or embarrassment she encountered from not having an education (being fired from a janitorial job due to no Diploma/GED, not being able to speak or spell well, etc.). The next quality my mother possessed early on in life was independency. That’s an attribute I recently received and started practicing. I still have a long way to go,
