Her dad took her away from the hospital without paying and soon after her mom was letting her cook again, as she called it, “Getting right back into the saddle.” At such a young age Jeannette didn’t take any anger out on her parents and soon took interest to fire. Soon after that thought the family had to pack their bags and leave again and do the “skedaddle” as their parents liked to call it. The parents were actually running away from bill collectors and guys that their dad owed money to. The father was an alcoholic and luckily wasn’t able to be one often because of the low money situation. However he was able to get a job almost anywhere, usually in small towns for side jobs, because of how convincing he could be.
Not a man, of course. Back then men were viewed as superior because that’s all they were ever taught. “It takes a lot of dishes and a lot of washing up, for mum to build an athlete” (Fairy Liquid and the Olympics) this reinforces the idea that women do the household chores in service to the males of the house. The implication that housework is purely a woman’s work is completely unacceptable in today’s day and age where women are seen as strong and independent. The unequal distribution of domestic responsibilities has held women back for generations; it still today continues to hinder women’s progression in the work-place.
Every time her uncle and aunts go visits her she always gets sad when they have to leave because of the goodbyes. Although most of the time his flights are delayed, she decides to stay home instead of going along to drop him and leaves, her father tells her that her uncle said he will never forget them. Furthermore, she talks about the day she turned fifteen and how they did not have enough money to celebrate like most girls with a quincenera but instead they have a gathering of 6 people to celebrate. Their budget is tight but her mom still decides to buy what her daughter deserves and nothing lower. She has a fun memory despite the struggle of being poor.
Ruth realized that as much as she loved cooking that it made her under appreciate her father and not take time to learn about him or his interest because cooking was the big thing to her and her mother in their family. Doug learned that he didn’t have the family structure as Ruth did and he always yearned for family would listen and talk to him about his accomplishes and things he enjoyed. Ruth’s whole outlook on this chapter is to inform us about a part in her life as she does in every other chapter. It’s very hard to relate with Ruth’s made point in this chapter because I have never experienced a feeling like Ruth has. So I cannot really relate to how she feels.
These are hard working women who in fact, not only work overtime but are also an active supporter towards their kid’s education and extracurricular activities. These are not women who sit around all day at home doing nothing with their lives such as not working or not in school. There are also many co-ed families who receive food stamps and public assistance and single fathers but a single mother makes up majority of help from the government.
