My Life by Anton chekhov My life isn’t a story just about Misail’s life, and his fight to become an independent worker, but each character represents something in Russia. The story commences with Misail, the protagonist, is fired from his job. Alexander Poloznez is the town’s only architect and his father. Chekhov constantly describes the architecture of many houses and building. He goes through meticulous descriptions. One can’t help but think is it because the need to make Russia perfect and always in the need for improvement. The need to make it individual because Russia had no individuality the people nearly shared the same names, and they weren’t allowed to voice their own political opions.They are always quarrelling about Misail’s job or lack of. Misail does not want to follow the pathway of many gentlemen in his society has, which is owning a job that has a secure and hefty income, but most of all it earns the respect of the many peers surrounding. “Anyone can do manual work, even a downright idiot or a criminal. It’s the distinguishing mark of slaves and barbarians, whereas the sacred fire is granted only to the few!” Alexander is a very rough man and beats his children when they confront him. Misail has a sister, Cleopatra, who worships her father out of fear. Alexander tries a different tactic to make his only son think straight and get a proper job by threatening him of being disinherited. Misail’s father didn’t expect his son to not care and just walk out, yet that was exactly what happened. Misail began working as a painter, painting sceneries at theatres which he enjoyed very much. Cleopatra begs him to get a proper occupation “’ Please spare a thought for us’”. She persuades him to agree into letting her find him a job of approval. The next day he was to meet Dolzhikov, and stumbles upon the engineer’s daughter, she greets him warmly whereas
