My Life As A Native American Dear Amanda: Thank you for your recent letter inquiring about my thoughts on the continued discrimination of Native Americans in America. As you can imagine, being of Native American heritage, I find it completely unacceptable in this day and age for racism and discrimination to be so prevalent. As I am sure you may not be are aware, that the American Indians have suffered through acts of racism and discrimination longer than any other race of people in the United States. With that being said, let me share a little of my heritage with you so that you might better understand the issues my people faced during the European invasion as well as today. At one time in history it was believed that the population of the different Native American tribes in the United States ranged anywhere for ten to ninety million people. Before the European invasion, Native American’s roamed throughout America freely and co-existed with each other peacefully. As groups of people moved about the land they began to developed several different Indian tribes or nations. Our people lived off the land, we planted crops, and we were excellent fishermen and avid hunters all in an efforts of survival. Our people were respectful of nature and knew how to cherish the land that they were blessed with. Once the European invasion began, the life of the Native Americans as we knew it would be changed forever. When the settlers first arrive in America, the Native Americans accepted the “white” people on to their land and shared their expertise. The Native American offered to help these people to settle in the strange new world and taught them how to survive even during the harshest winters they have ever endured. The kindness of the Native Americans would eventually be met by the overwhelming greediness of the “white man” which in turn would destroy
