Most people barbeque chicken, hotdogs, hamburgers, ribs, and much more, but everyone has king cakes which are only in Louisiana. The smell of the people barbequing is marvelous. Everyone has an abundance of food; therefore no one goes hungry and maybe have enough for leftovers the next day. After everything is over; the floats and eating, people pack their chairs, towels, bags of beads, barbeque pits and head on home after an exhaustive day. When they get home they take the beads out the bags and keep the ones they like and throw the rest in the bag, and the little kids look through the bags to find toys that they can play with.
“Yeah” I replied with a little sarcasm in my voice. We walked to the car and I opened the truck to display all I had in there. He seen I had a collection of fishing poles and started a conversation about bass fishing. He started with “I see you like fishing?” I said “Yes I do a little bass fishing when I have the time.” He asked “Have you ever done any tournament fishing”. I replied “I had not.” He started to explain to me how the tournaments worked, and how profitable it is if you were good enough.
He just slammed it over and over out of the park. One day after a big game he went out to celebrate with his couch, who was imaginary of course because Don Jenkins was a one man team. He stopped at the local market to pick up his cottage cheese fix for the night. He grabbed 5 litres, more than he had ever eaten in one sitting. Needless to say, it was going to be a big night.
Let 10 more minutes pass then add the corn-on-the-cob. After 10 more minutes, add the crab meat. 2 minutes later, add the shrimp. Cook for 4 more minutes, then drain liquid from pot and pour contents over a clean, unused large garbage bag or newspapers. Serve with melted butter and enjoy!!
The lobster feast they would have every time was the highlight of the trip. John would go down to the ocean with a large pot and fill it with sea water. The two would then set to cooking putting the lobsters into the boiling sea water and waiting. When he was young John would place his hand on top of Margaret’s as she held down the lid. But now due to her age the roles have reversed and she would place her hand on top of his (Crapanzano 48).
Walking into Nonna’s house smelling homemade sugo(pasta sauce) being dumped onto the fresh pasta she had probably made that very day was the best! On the table was chicken cutlets, salad, rapine, and so many other dishes along with tutto la familia(The whole family) I remember having to kiss everyone two times on the cheek, I didn’t understand this then but as I got older, I realised the importance of the kissing on the cheeks. After a big lunch, my Zio Stefano brought out a cake and everyone sang to me, they brought me gifts and I hold dear to me the gift I received from my mother. She had given me a necklace that was my great grandmothers. At that moment I didn’t care for it until I later learned that it was a necklace passed down from generation to generation.
This is shown in the story on page 6 when it says “Proudly, oh, so proudly, Mr. Duvitch exhibited the catch that would probably feed his family for the better part of a week: a fine mess of bass, perch and sunfish, all of them alive, as far as I could see, and swimming around in the oaken washtub in which they had been dropped.” This shows that he gives everything to feed his family, is proud of his contribution to his family and will endure endless mosquito bites and the burning sun in order to make his family happy. He also has a difficult full time job that allows him to provide for his family. This is described on page 3 when it says “His job, a rather malodorous one, was with the local rendering plant as a laborer”. This shows that he will sacrifice his enjoyment for his family’s happiness and wellbeing. Secondly he has so little but gives so much.
I've never been fishing before let alone riding in a fishing boat. A couple of hours before the derby was to start my Uncle Deck was to going to teach me the fine "art" of fishing. The thought of hooking my own worm made me want to scream, just the feeling of the worms body sliding in and out of my fingers sent shivers down my spine. It was the most disgusting think I ever felt, but eventually I came over my fear and was able to hook the worm myself, just in time for the derby to start .Although I didn't catch the "big one" but the one I did catch was a twelve pound large mouth bass, it took me about forty-five minutes to finally reel it in. Uncle Deck surprised me before we left the cabin, he had the large-mouth bass I caught taxidermy and mounted on a wooden plaque for me, to this day it still hangs on the wall of my grandparents house.
As the cabbie gets paid his fee, we scamper across the street with a slight bounce in our step, and turn the corner to find our favorite pre-game bar. The Cubby Bear is an everyday sports bar until the game arrives. Then, the spacious building, wallpapered in Cubs jerseys and old photographs, becomes alive with fans, scalpers, and tourists. The pre-game show is on every television in the bar, beer is tumbling out of the taps, and everyone is friends with everyone. Round after round comes to our table and we talk to anyone we can about how exciting today’s game is because every game is a big game for Cubs fans!
She also sits in front of the TV all day. She finally got tired of cheese and crackers so she got her b-day money and went to the store. She gets some soup in a can. On her way back she sees a pet store and goes in. She doesn't have much money but then she turns around and sees some fish and a sign that says BETTA FISH $3.99.
