My First Job I moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for the last two months of my senior year. I moved there so that I could graduate from high school on time. My aunt graciously invited me to live with her family. After registering for school, my next priority was finding a job-- any job! I started the search! I applied everywhere, in person and online. But I found nothing. I would not give up! But as time passed, I became discouraged and anxious. It was hopeless. There was a Dairy Queen, Grill and Chill just down the street from my aunt’s house. Hopefully, I applied there. I had a great feeling about this one because my grandparents had owned two Dairy Queens in Las Vegas. I had spent a lot of time there when I was a child. I was getting ready for graduation when the phone rang. It was Ashley, the manager from Dairy Queen! I had the Job! I was relieved and so happy! My first day at work was a hot and humid Tuesday. Dressed in a black tank top, black Dickie pants and black converse shoes, I headed for work. I greeted the other employees with a cheerful smile. They gave me an official Dairy Queen shirt to wear and training began. I wondered why the manager wasn’t there to train me, but was told that she had called in sick. I thought that it was strange that she would leave my training up to employees, but brushed it off and got to work. I learned how to make those amazing blizzards that Dairy Queen is famous for. I was surprised to find that they were simple to make. There were lots of different kinds and I had to memorize all the recipes. The ice cream cones were more difficult to master. Let me tell you, it’s harder than it looks. I tried about a million times before I got it right. At last I could make one good enough to give to a customer. I had the hang of it!
