My First Impressions of America My sister, who came to the United States two months earlier than me, made me laugh when she answered my “What’s America like?”, a couple of hours after I first put my feet on American soil: -“In this country, everything is big, except cockroaches!” It was hard to disagree with her about that, because it’s simply evidence, as I saw big trucks in big freeways, big shopping carts in big chain stores, big fruits in big back yards, and in the other hand, a very small, shy and dumb cockroach, meditating near a trash can. These cockroaches, one of those creatures that I hate the most, have an enormous size in many countries, so the diminutive size of this one is my first positive feeling. My family’s first night under the sky of America is a fearful night. We believed that a burglar could at any moment break through the windows to enter into force the house. But when morning came, everything seemed quite fine under the bright sunshine of Southern California. In our country, windows are always reinforced by iron bars, so that any intrusion is practically impossible. Is the fragility of the windows the reason why Americans desperately need guns? (just kidding!). Only within a week, children in my “big family” could easily register for high school and I myself took an ESL class at Lincoln Community College, many thanks to the very good education system. Later, I found out that in common life, the words “job, stress, and shopping” are apparently the most spoken words I heard since I began my settlement. Perhaps these words have a close relationship. First, everyone must find a job, as the only mean that help them survive in this country; Secondly, job causes stress, because the work rate here is very high, working environment very strict. Moreover, Americans are said to be workaholic, trying to do their best and to prove their efficiency, as a common value; and third, when you are stressful, the easy and efficient way to reduce it is going shopping, if you believe in what most women in Vietnamese community have
