My Favourite Short Story

Favourite Short Story  I would have to say that the short story “Harrison Bergeon” was my favourite and most appealing to me.  What did the other do to make it my favourite of the three? What made this book so interesting to me is that you could justify so many different meanings of it. You could justify that the message/meaning was; Equality, Peace, Fairness, Control etc. I think that’s really good for a short story or any story for that matter, something that makes you think and doesn’t only have one right answer. Having so many different possibilities leads to questions and thoughts which I find really important because both of those can help you understand the book and the meaning much more. You can look at it at a different way from yours. I really enjoyed discussing everyone’s ideas in class and listening to their ideas and seeing if it made sense and/or connected to mine. I really enjoyed the idea of the story as well. A society trying to be equal and to do so they would go to extreme measures so that everyone is. The Handicap was really interesting and unique which made me appreciate the author’s work even more. The whole story had very unique ideas to make the society a Utopia. In the Giver, in order to make a perfect society, everyone learned the same things until they came to a certain age and they would get their job. And there was no questioning it. That was your job and you were going to do it. In this story, I assume you can do whatever you want but the government makes you equal by placing handicaps in your ears for mental equality and then heavy bags and other things on your body for physically equality. I was really happy with the way the story turned out. Sure I’m not happy that Harrison died, but it makes good story writing by doing something unexpected and that the readers wouldn’t want.
