However, Bechdel's clean, distinctive illustration style with its wry observations and amusing details is fun to read and examine, and drew this reader into her story quickly. Indeed, it's regrettable that this review can only include quotations and not excerpts of Bechdel's drawings. Several delightful and revealing images are included, such as her grandmother chasing a "piss-ant," her early identification with Wednesday Addams, the summer of the locusts, her teenaged diary entries, and several aspects of her own adolescent self-discoveries. One cannot help but identify with Bechdel. However, despite the pain and struggle Bechdel has had facing her father's life and death, the book is neither morose nor depressing.
One of Mr. Bostwicks many mantras he has us memorize is something I think really helps me and it goes a little something like this “ words make up phrases and clauses, phrases and clauses makes sentences, sentences makes paragraphs, and paragraphs makes composition.” Altogether I give mister Bostwick my SEAL of approval. I think I have done something pretty amazing in this essay I have summed up my high school English career into a 2 pages. I have had my troubles in the past. I have my troubles now. I have had a great year with Mr. Bostwick.
Two part Response to “ The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading” Part 1. Summary In this essay, Ricky Moody writes an essay about the joy and enthusiasm of reading. He shares all of his beliefs about reading, like wandering through the stacks and picking out the first thing that strikes him. Ricky believes in books when others dislike them. Ricky choses the hardest books imaginable.
She states multiple times that the children within the education system are being cheated every day because they are not being forced to read more difficult books. “Such benefits are denied to the young reader exposed only to books with banal, simple-minded moral equations as well as to the student encouraged to come up with reductive, wrong-headed readings of mulitlayered texts” (Prose 97). The reader can blatantly see that Prose thinks negatively of the high school curriculum that today's students face. It seems clear that Prose does not want to hide her personal view or feelings, so she starts her essay out in a way that we do not have to read between the lines to get a sense of how she feels about what she is writing. She uses more emotional language when she says, "The intense loyalty adults harbor for books first encountered in youth is one probable reason for the otherwise baffling longevity of vintage mediocre novels, books that teachers may themselves have read in adolescence"(Prose
It will take all his know-how and determination, and more courage than he knew he ever possessed. I decided to read this book I had to do an English assignment on it in intermediate. When I read the book, I was instantly drawn to the interesting storyline because I had never read this kind of book before. The book is rather well written and the language is easy to understand.
It’s easy to find a cheesy book that is so cheesy it isn’t even funny and books that are so serious that you could read the entire novel cover to cover without a single facial expression. This novel is just the perfect bit of seriousness and comedy at the same time. Lastly, this book is educational. What would be the point of the book if it didn’t teach a lesson? This novel teaches some important and valuable life lessons that can change the way people are viewed, and help one to understand why they behave the way they do.
Dear Classmate, A Child Called “It” is one of my favorite books. I read it for the first time in my speech class for my speech about child abuse. I had heard a lot about it and how good it was so I decided to read it. Unlike other novels lying around, this book caught my attention and kept me very interested, I could not put it down. It makes you think about what some kids go through everyday.This book was a definite eye opener to abuse.
Ashley Bond The Devils Arithmetic The novel The Devils Arithmetic is a memorable novel. This novel is filled with great description and detail. In my opinion I loved this book I enjoyed reading it and it really Is a great story. This novel when you start reading you don't want to stop it defiantly is a page turner and you'll be on the edge of your seat to see what happens next. This novel is about a thirteen year old girl named Hannah.
Every serious story led to another joke that kept begging me to keep reading. He was very straight forward with the things he said and thought, and made comparing his stories to everyday life scenarios a lot easier and helped me to learn to laugh. I really enjoyed my time reading Me Talk Pretty One Day. I’ve never laughed so much and haven’t wanted to put a book down. This is definitely a book that I would recommend.
I read 50 pages on just the first day and since then I have read just as many pages each day. Whenever I read the book around other people, they either ask me is it a good book or I try to tell them it’s a good book, then I recommend them to read it. In the past, whenever I finished reading a book, I could never remember anything I just read, but with this book, I knew exactly what was going on both during the book and after I finished the book. It was so much fun reading this book. I have somewhat gone through the same thing that Anne
