My Family Escaped from Vietnam

In 1981 my family attempted to escape from Vietnam. It has been estimated that over half the persons who tried to escape Vietnam by boat died at sea, more than a million persons. But even though it was dangerous we were willing to risk our life because the communist hated my family so bad that we could not survive in Vietnam. There were nine persons in my immediate family when we tried to escape by boat from Thuan An Beach in Hue. My Father, my mother, me, and four brothers, and two sisters tried to escape from Vietnam. We started in the night of March 23, 1981 (Wednesday). The boat had a total of forty people in it (including my family), all wanting to escape Vietnam. Our boat planned to sail to Hong Kong. The next day, the ocean had a signal of storm and we had to try to run away from a storm. We ended up about one half km from the coast of Vietnam in Quang Tri Province when the storm caused the boat to capsize. It was around 4 AM (March 24, 1981) in the morning when the boat capsized. All of us on the boat could swim and we swam to the beach. We were lying on the beach near a group willow trees and we heard a lot of gunshots. The Police Coastguard yelled at us that we were reactionary. At that time it was about five AM and we saw a lot of blood coming out of my brother, Nguyen Hua Phung. He was shot in the head and he was dead. My brother was only two years older than me, he being born in 1964 and me in 1966. In that time, I was only 15 years old, but I witness how Police Coastguards killed my elder brother: the bullet of gun fired the temporal bone of head; my father took him in his arm, the blood coming out a lot. My father shirt imbrued with blood from my brother. Police Coastguards dug a grave in sand and intend buried my brother without the coffin. My mother cried and begged the Police Coastguards to let her use her overcoat to wrap dead-body of my brother.
