My Cultural Identity What is a person’s cultural identity? It is the beliefs, ideas and behaviors embraced by a person. Basically the cultural identity is the lifestyle or a way of life of a certain individual. In this essay I will be revealing my cultural identity and I will be also writing about how it has shaped me in to the person who I am today. I was born in SriLanka, in the hospital of Jayewardenepura. Both parents belong to the Sinhalese ethnic group and they also are Buddhist. In my early life my ethnic group and my religion have played major role in my cultural identity. I then joined my college Rugby team in hopes of getting into shape, however it turned even worse I gained more weight because the position I played required a lot of weight. Plus I had a lot of bad food habits; my average meals were usually very unhealthy. I spent a lot of time in junk food shops and also consumed alcohol when I was with my friends. I had other disruptive habits such us breaking rest and I was also an overweight couch potato. This made my parents worry a lot about my health and most of the time I sad, depressed and lacked confidence. I was a huge fan of the WWE also known as the World Wrestling Entertainment, Bruce Lee and Martial Arts and every time watched one of these people in television I wondered what if I could be like them. They were confident, hard working and disciplined. This was the time started to embrace the culture of physical fitness and martial arts. Luckily my best friend is a great martial artist and he introduced me martial arts and physical culture. In the beginning it was difficult and also impossible, my diet was not disciplined because I found it difficult to control the craving for junk food and the workouts were very difficult. However I was blessed with the ability fight even though I was overweight and undisciplined. I was still overweight and not in control. This situation leads me to reading physical fitness manuals and books which gave me more knowledge about physical culture. Then I started taking action which resulted me getting into decent shape. I was happier and more confident which lead me to read and study even more about the culture of physical fitness. I would like mention that embracing physical culture while respecting and following my religious and ethnic lifestyle has been the best thing that has happened to me.
