“The mother was beaten to death. 5 The conditions of the battle of the Somme were not ideal. There was had been lots of rain prior and during the battle. The trenches were full of mud, rats and diseases. The mud made moving around in the trenches very hard which led to many cases of trench foot and also the mud made some on the Canadian’s guns not fire. There were many rats in the trenches because of the rotting bodies which led to disease spreading like lice.
I have now been in front line for just over a week. The smell out here in these trenches is so bad it has made our toughest men sick. The smell is so vile I can’t even describe it over a letter. To give you a an idea of what the men out here have to contend with, there is raw sewage from an open cesspit; body odour from men who haven’t washed in ages; dead bodies decaying in shallow graves, also they are out in the open in no man’s land. The smell of dead rotten bodies attracts rats.
There are a plethora of problems with the system that the city refuses to ix. One of the main problems with the subway is the dirt and grime that are overrunning the carts. Everywhere you look there are piles of garbage lying around on the platforms. There is an inadequate amount of trash cans on the platforms. Due to this problem, people resort to throwing their used napkins, cans, and wrappers on the floor.
Death was constant and not unusual for soldiers. Many soldiers didn’t even survive the first day. Besides this, many of the trenches were infested with rats, and soldiers feared them. Rats tended to feed on human corpses, spread infections and contaminate food. Rats weren’t the only problem concerning infection.

As well as these problems in the summer one of the worst things was the stink. The smell of rotting corpses stank and became bloated. These corpses also led to the spread of disease throughout the Allied trenches causing losses. When autumn came many soldiers thought it was a blessing to be free of the heat but as it got colder they were faced with the problems such as flooding, wind gusts and frostbite.
