One year, the same year I wanted to be a fashion designer, my mother brought me a sewing machine for my birthday. I was so excited I wanted to make EVERYTHING. That summer my grandfather paid for me to get sewing lessons from a lady he knew. By the time the lessons were over I had made a skirt, a purse and pajamas.

In 1926 she transferred to Parsons School of Design in Paris, where she became immersed in fashion. It was while in Paris that Claire gained a thorough knowledge of French couturiers. It was also here that she began to understand the relationship between style and comfort, or the lack of it. After spending a year in France Claire returned back to New York to complete her studies. As Claire grew into the industry, her love of sports was always a massive influence and taught her that clothes can be functional, and comfortable.
The passage depicts the entire community of Stamps preparing for, and experiencing, graduation ceremonies at the local black schools. Children are described as trembling "with visible anticipation" and the teachers have now become "respectful of the now quiet and aging seniors." Wealthy families will buy new, custom made garments and poor families will pick out their best and ensure that the clothes are freshly scrubbed and pressed. The passage is then intertwined with the use of subjective narration. Angelou uses the subjective form to describe her place within the Stamps community.

Being the only “white” person, I do receive a lot of stares from the people there. Most of them come with smiles, but some come with the look of “what the heck is this guy doing here.” Luckily I was able to have my wife close by as my safety blanket so I didn’t look too much like a wedding crasher. The wedding was beautiful the couple looked very nervous at first but looked like they had eased into a more relaxed mood towards the end. After the ceremony the couple stayed around to take pictures with friends and family. I was able to go up and stand on the grooms’ side during the picture taking.
I was so happy to be a part of something that I ran up the street to his house. When I got there, there was a huge photo of me on the front door. They had blown up an ad from when I had modeled for Wal-Mart -- a really embarrassing photo of me in a blue Power Ranger costume. Everybody was laughing. I remember that walk home was the longest one of my life.
I had never seen her sew a quilt before I was amazed. She was making it for an auction to raise money. She had collected several different patterns of fabric, some from her old collection and some new collection. When she finished I described it as masterpiece because it looked so good. Furthermore, for weeks I begged her to teach me how to make a quilt of my own.

October 2010 From the desk of Bridget M. Johnson, BSA, MHA “You’re cordially invited to the University of Phoenix commencement exercises of the graduating class of 2010” No Regrets The year is 2010. It is a beautiful fall day as I leave the University of Phoenix Metairie campus with the fantastic news from my counselor that I met all requirements to obtain my master’s degree in Business Administration/Healthcare management. Immediately I begin to construct the invitation in my mind seen above to send to family and friends so that everyone can share in the celebration of me fulfilling the ultimate personal goal of my life, the completion of my college degrees, the catalyst to an even better life, personally, professionally and financially. This personal goal was planted in my heart over twenty-five years ago. I attended college for a brief spell prior to the birth of my son.
