My Achievement Essay

My Achievement If ten years of education has taught me anything, it is that achievements come in many varied forms, and different people understand the word differently. To me, awards and recognition are no yardsticks to measure my own achievement as I defined it by the amount of community involvement that I’ve contributed to my society. Through the hardships that I’ve faced, my aspiration to be an active part of this fast evolving world remains undiminished. With this ambition in mind, I was urged to take part in a Science project competition held by the school. I was keen on trying an experiment, where I can apply textbook theory to real- life situations. After some advice from my chemistry teacher, I picked an experiment that I felt would benefit many around the world, especially third world countries like Cambodia. The original idea of the experiment, called “pot- in-pot refrigerator” is to use water vaporization to preserve food in a place where refrigeration is not available. This is done by placing a small clay pot inside a bigger one, then filling the space between them with damp sand. When the water evaporates, heat is absorbed from the inner pot, leaving the surface cool, and making the temperature inside the pot cooler than room temperature. Such a simple endothermic reaction can have the potential to help people living in rural areas, where they have limited or no access to electricity, to solve the problems of food storage. I was met with many difficulties while conducting this experiment, the most challenging of which is to acquire materials that are not readily available in the school laboratory, a clay-pot is one of them. The modern city life made sure that not a trace of it is left anywhere, as people turned to cheaper and more durable alternatives like plastics and polyester. My grandmother
