The massive number of European immigrants that entered into America’s east coast from the late 1800’s and on forever influenced the growth and development of the country. Fleeing crop failure, famine, rising taxes, and land/job shortages, many immigrants journeyed to the United States because it was perceived as the land of economic opportunity. With hope for a brighter future, nearly 27 million immigrants arrived in the United States between 1880 and 1920. The majority of the immigrants entered through Ellis Island, leading it to become the gateway to America and become recognized as a national symbol. Many of the immigrants, not knowing the way America worked, didn’t stray too far from the East Coast and moved into areas filled with people of similar languages, traditions, and beliefs.
It has altered dramatically the way we spent our money, entertained ourselves, dressed and even socialized. One of the most significant changes to have occurred in the Australian popular culture was the change in music. Our traditional style of music which as mainly British and was usually slow and calm, was infiltrated and substituted by active and lively American music within less than a decade. Different Decades American has changed dramatically since the revolution. Every decade marks a different society represented by our growth as a society. This is further seen in the article in reference to Portugal’s decriminalization of drugs dating back to 2001. A study by the British Journal of Criminology found that the increase in users has increased only marginally if at all. The deregulation of government involvement has decreased the price of drugs but the demand has not greatly increased in response.
