Multiple Roles of Managers & Leaders in Workplace Stress Reduction Introduction Though people have not reached consensus on the definition of workplace stress, (Hobfoll, 1989) Generally speaking, workplace stress refers to a combined negative state of emotion, physiology and cognition. (Wilson& Bostock, 1993) It is universally acknowledged that appropriate stress in workplace is normal, as it prompts employees to manage their time and role well to improve productivity. While excessive stress, which is now haunting many employees and organizations, is bringing about hazardous impacts on the mental and physical health of employees, and finally the overall productivity of the company. Due to the volatile international situations and economic fluctuations, companies are forced to lay off employees and achieve budget cuts, so as to raise competitiveness in the global market. This has thus led to such a situation: employees that are luckily chosen to stay shoulder up more responsibilities and workloads than before, some of which initially are not what they are expert in, with the old furnitures and decorations of the workplace making the employees even more depressive. Many other problems may breed too. All these problems then transform into forceful sources of stressors, leaving little space for the employees to take a breath and work as usual. Why Tackle Workplace Stress? Although workplace stress’ impacts on employees vary as a result of different occupation, age, gender and personality, it invariably leads to serious problems, be they mental or physical. Employees under much pressure in their work are more prone to suffer from extremely negative emotions like anxiety, depression or irritability, and other symptoms like fatigue, compulsive behaviors, lack of interest and low productivity.
