The Emory University Professor, Patrick Alit PhD; University of California, Berkley analyses in his Paper, “American Identity”, “What defines an American? Is it love of Liberty, the pursuit of justice, the urge to invent, the desire for wealth, the drive to explore, the quest for spiritual values? The paradox of the American identity is that although the United States is a melting pot of many different traditions, motives and ideals, there are nevertheless distinctive qualities that define the American character.”   All the aforementioned I view as what truly makes this country great and forges the American Identity. Each culture, ethnic group and race in this country has or have acquired these values which make us truly American. We could have all come from different backgrounds but we have love for liberty that is why we live in this country.   We live in a country whose constitution includes, "With Liberty and justice for all.”   That is the reason many immigrants from all over the world have made sacrifices to live in this blessed country. This is the reason our young men and women have given their lives to maintain the freedom and values we hold so dear. Young men who themselves are immigrants and whose parents and grandparents are/were immigrants. Despite the changes in some of our behavior; the moral values; the drugs; our education system in struggle to maintain the best in the world; the political and financial situations and not to forget the crime. I feel at the core that the billions of true Americans regardless of our differences and culture still maintain the values stated above. Many of our forefathers have died to maintain these values.
