Multiculturalism promotes the idea that we can live side by side happily. How far do you agree/disagree with this concept? Write at least 300 words, giving reference to your country. Multiculturalism is a term that means a society where people of different cultures, habits, origin, life style and religion are able to live side by side respecting each other and, in spite of a multitude of “cultural exchanges”, each individual can preserve distinctiveness of its “group”. In a multicultural society, “minorities” can continue to exist without melting into a predominant culture, mantaining their identity and their life-style. Firstly, although it can be said that living in a multicultural society our culture might be mixed with others, losing its origins and traditions, it is also true that a multicultural society allow people to expand their culture and to learn new things. For instance, in a multicultural society people can try new food, broaden their cultural horizons or approach a new religion without moving from their own country. Secondly, is important to underline that in a multicultural society, if people want to live side by side happily, they must interact without doing other people harm and without taking extreme attitudes: introducing a new religion or a new culture in a country may enrich people’s life, on the other hand, if people’s attitudes were extreme or totally different, it could create a lot of problems in society. For example, the burqa, an enveloping outer garment worn by women in some Islamic traditions to cover their bodies when in public, has created several social problems for women leaving in some European countries. Local people don’t want to communicate and interact with them and as a result they have been alienated.
