The participation in the dominant culture and the preservation of one’s own ethnic heritage according to Cultural Pluralism benefits the U.S. democratic development because the immigrants can behave and share their cultures while participate other cultures; besides, it promotes commercial development which helps the economic growth. According to “Ethnic Identity and Majority Culture,” Milton Gordon claims that Unites States is not only being “a cooperation of cultural diversities,” but also “a federation or commonwealth of national cultures.” This quote implies that the United States respect every culture and let everyone share their own culture. As a result, immigrants blend into this society with their original cultures. Moreover, they learn and absorb other different cultures while preserve their own culture. These will make new immigrants believe that America will not meddle with their freedom of learning and behaving different cultures, because America is a democratic country.
Individualism is not all bad. Having a deep sense of pride in oneself and seeking to distance oneself from a controlling society or culture is understandable; however, there is the option of seeking out another community that would be very accepting of others who want to find connections and a safe “family.” Individuality separates and nationality combines. Nationality seeks to create a community and a family for one who needs that sort of backbone in their life. Individuals don’t necessarily have to seek dissent so that they could be rid of the controlling minds of society; moreover, they can seek to find refuge in another community that would provide the deep connection that most humans need. Community can be helpful since most people need others in order to succeed or get to a certain point in
Leila Ahmed’s The Discourse of the Veil explores the real source of women’s struggles in Islam versus the purely symbolic ones that the West concentrates its critique on. Since before the 17th century, the West has been forming opinion of the Middle East, depicting what makes it so different. Most of the ideas were focused on women, because they were the most visibly different to “western eyes.” Travelers and crusaders made uninformed assumptions about how women were dressed and how that reflected upon Muslim society. “The thesis of the new colonial discourse of Islam centered on women was that Islam was innately and immutably oppressive to women, that the veil and segregation epitomized that oppression, and that these customs were the fundamental reasons for the general and comprehensive backwardness of Islamic societies” (Ahmed 152). The idea that the veil is holding Islam back as a civilization was greatly encouraged by writer Amin, and
The veiling and seclusion of women in El Nahra is held with such high regard that it is believed that a woman who is not veiled is an immoral woman (pg. 6) and is used as a way of protecting family
That’s why women should cover their hair!” Because of this backward thought process and the rules of the Islamic religion, women were forced to wear a veil; men had to wear long-sleeved shirts to cover up their arms. To show opposition, some women would let a few strands of hair show and would wear a long dress or jacket, with pants. More religious women wore a “chador” which covered their entire body shapelessly. The veil’s impact on women’s lives was enormous. They became more sheltered and relied on their husbands and fathers more to direct them.
Based on Entry Denied, “Communities often focus on preserving cultural tradition through controlling the gender and sexual behavior of the women. At the same time, outsiders judge immigrants through stereotypes about the sexuality of the community’s women. Thus, immigrant women find themselves caught between the racism of the dominant society and the sexist expectation of their own community”. This is true for many immigrant communities such as the Arab-Americans. For instance, even though many of the Arab American women are required to cover themselves, almost all of them cover their bodies because they choose and not because they are forced to.

Some examples would be, to move to a place where you didn't speak the language; this would make it hard to communicate with your neighbors or your community. Should a person have to alter their ways just to be able to fit in and be accepted? I find it much easier to live in a community where people are more like my self. Being accepted can go both ways. If you accept them, they would have to accept you in order to live in one
