Movie Critique: Black Hawk Down Black Hawk Down is based on the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia. The movie follows the true story behind U.S. Involvement in Somalia. The mission was supposed to take thirty minutes, but it turned out to be a nightlong battle between American soldiers against thousands of heavily armed Somali militia. In 1993, the United Nations made a disputable decision to get involved in Somalia’s civil war. The movie begins with some brief information about the status of Somalia: 300,000 people died as the result of hunger and war. Somali’s self-proclaimed president Mohammed Farrah Aidid caused famine, civil war and many more problems to the country. The next scene takes place at the Red Cross food distribution center where people are trying to get food and supplies from the UN trucks. Suddenly a gun fires from a pick-up truck nearby and shoots at the people who are trying to get food. The truck goes in and secures the UN trucks. One guy on the truck yells “This is property of Mohammed Farrah Aidid, go back to your homes”. Unlike other presidents of Somalia, Aidid uses weapons and famine to control his country. A couple weeks later, after the Marines left, the militia led by Aidid regrouped and declared war with the UN relief effort. The next mission is to capture two of Aidid’s top advisers at their meeting in downtown Mogadishu. The US Forces are going to send their experienced men as well as new recruits on this mission, including Staff Sergeant Eversmann. He is the commander of Ranger Chalk Four, his first command. Despite the fact that the men are fighting dor the country they still prioritize the needs of the command over the needs of the people. Eversmann said: “Look, these people... they have no jobs, no food, no education, no future. I just figure that you know, I mean, we have two things we can do. We can help, or we can sit back and
