The state of birth, suffering, love, and death are extreme states—extreme, universal, and inescapable. We all know this, but we would rather not know it. The artist is present to correct the delusions to which we fall prey in our attempts to avoid this knowledge. It is for this reason that all societies have battled with the incorrigible disturber of the peace—the artist. I doubt that future societies will get on with him any better.
It is very much feared also. If the world did end, it would be very scary for people that may have survived. “The city was a dead place,” (Benet 411). For John, it was a place with no excitement, and nothing at all. The apocalypse is supposed to happen because of the sun burning up, so it would be very cold and lonely.

These two themes show the ugly side of war. Insanity among the soldiers and the way they view each other is very unusual. The soldiers can’t conform to one another or follow a common set of rules. The reader also sees that regardless of his mental state, Yossarian can’t be discharged. The theme of death, is one that is against war.
An example of this would be in the theme of isolation as Dracula’s castle is hidden in the recesses of Transylvania, kept away from civilization of any description. It is evident from Jonathan’s journey by train to the castle that not only is it secluded from society but the landscape in which it is situated is also wild and out of control- another Gothic convention. The ruined castle itself is littered with myriad and secret passageways- its owner (Dracula) too lives in solitude, isolating himself from not only
“The dust, the fear, the high threat level, the isolation-all of that was the surge the soldiers knew . . . Here, Cummings had another thought: ‘This place is a complete shithole’“ (Finkel 148-149). This quote shows the medieval castle aspect almost always found in the gothic novel type, but also even begins to set up the dark, gloomy, and uneasy atmosphere that is so important in this kind of literature. Within the first four chapters, Jonathan, describes the setting of the Count’s old abandoned-looking castle which gave Jonathan, not to mention the reader, an uneasy feeling: “..for there is something so strange about this place and all in it that I cannot but feel uneasy. I wish I were safe out of
Stakeholders, positions, interests, value orientations, and attitudes One of the stakeholders involved in this debate include Eric Borowsky, the owner of Arizona Snowbowl. Due to the fact that it is either “expand or go out of business” Mr. Borowsky’s position is that of to allow for the expansion of his resort and the use of treated sewage effluence as fake snow. His main problems are that the ski resort industry is very competitive and the changing climate and snow patterns. These two factors are what are driving Mr. Borowsky and Arizona Snowbowl towards the drastic changes they are trying to make. One value orientation that seems to be motivating their position is utilitarian.
