However, five of them died on their descent as a storm engulfed the mountain. Mount Everest stands at 8,850 meters above sea level, and its summit ridge separates Nepal and Tibet; it is the tallest mountain on Earth and also one of the deadliest. The popularity of climbing the mountain exploded after two individuals, Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay of Nepal, first completed the feat on May 29th, 1953. Everest became this whole new sensation, and many flocked to test their abilities against the giant. On May 6th two teams, Adventure Consultants directed by Rob Hall, and Mountain Madness led by Scott Fischer, set out conquer the mountain. Prior to the departure towards the summit and on the mountain as well, many events took place that to this day are discussed as possible reasons for the death of the five individuals. During this case analysis we will analyze the possible causes that led to the death of five individuals as well as precautions that could have been taken to prevent it.
