Task 2 (M1) Pemba Dorjie’s expedition was a solo expedition where he did the fastest ever ascent and descent of Everest. On May 23, 2003 he reached the peak in 12 hours and 46 minutes. His climb is considered one of the greatest feats in mountaineering. Marco Polo did didn’t travel alone so his expeditions are grouped expeditions. He is famous for his traveling miles through Asia and being one of the first Europeans to travel into Mongolia and China.
Shaun White is in a class of his own sweeping the winter X-Games and Olympics for years on end in first place. There are different varieties of snowboarders from the cautious riders, the intermediate boarders, the all out flyers, and the professionals. It’s not easy to be classified a good snowboarder, few have made their mark and even fewer will be remembered by name. As a diehard snowboarder myself, I will take pleasure in writing this paper and defining each of the four categories listed above. Barreling down a mountain, after perfecting the half-pipe
I became attached to the characters, and felt their life’s to be important when they were trapped on top of the mountain. I would really recommend, I found it entertaining, suspenseful, informative, and fun. • Memorable quotes o “None of them imagined that horrible ordeal was drawing nigh. Nobody suspected that by the end of that long day, every minute would matter.” pg. 11 o “Following Sikhdar’s discovery in 1852, it would require the lives of twenty-four men, the efforts of fifteen expeditions, and the passage of 101 years before the summit of Everest would finally be attained” pg.
In Alaska I’d put up a hairy new route on the Mooses Tooth, and pulled off a solo ascent of the Devils Thumb that involved spending three weeks alone on a remote ice cap. I’d done a number of fairly extreme ice climbs in Canada and Colorado” (27-28). b. Krakauer has had lots of previous experiences climbing mountains. One thing I got confused with in this story is the excess amount of mountaineering terms throughout. Krakauer has been climbing for a long time, so he must know everything about it and I trust that he uses the terms correctly, therefore his writing is very credible.
Due to all of Iceland’s volcanic activity, there is also a great deal of glacial activity. According to Wikipedia, the glaciers of Iceland cover 11.1% of the land area of the country, having a considerable impact on the country’s landscape. Most of the glaciers are on top of volcanoes. The largest glacier in Iceland is called Vatnajökull, which alone covers 8% of Iceland; it is also the largest glacier in Europe. Vatnajökull appears to have started shrinking in size ever since the 1930s, which is believed to be due to climate
For this criteria I will cover four different types of activities. I will talk about duration, area, type, form and aims of these activities and I will compare and contrast them. So the activities that I will cover are: Ten Tors, 3 Peaks challenge, Mountain Everest and | Ten Tors | 3 Peaks Challenge | Mountain Everest | Top Gear polar special. | Type | Ten tors are based in teams of 6 and in total there are 400 teams which in total there is 2400 people participating in an event. | It is a group expedition more people are better but good team would make around 8-10 people.
The late William T. Pecora, a former Director of the USGS, was quoted in a May 10, 1968, newspaper article in the Christian Science Monitor as being "especially worried about snow-covered Mt. St. Helens." On the basis of its youth and its high frequency of eruptions over the past 4,000 years, Crandell, Mullineaux, and their colleague Meyer Rubin published in February 1975 that Mount St. Helens was the one volcano in the conterminous United States most likely to reawaken and to erupt "perhaps before the end of this century." This prophetic

This proves to be true in the novel Into Thin Air. In Jon Krakauer’s novel, Into Thin Air, feelings of hubris lead to disaster along the face of Mt. Everest. This is displayed through the decisions of various sherpas, clients, and expedition guides. To begin, the sherpas assisting expedition tours exhibit hubris in Into Thin Air, through their confidence of being able to withstand high altitudes.
