In the sixth grade, when I was eleven years old, every Sunday my mother started taking my sister and me to Holy Name Catholic Church. There, after a couple of months, we had our first holy communion. I hardly paid any attention to the study. I remember my mom told me, “If you stop attending church for your confirmation

Amish weddings are traditionally held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in late fall, after the final autumn harvest. A couple's engagement is usually kept secret until just a few weeks before the wedding when their intentions are "published" in church. The weddings usually take place at the home of the bride's parents with a lengthy ceremony, followed by a huge feast for the invited guests. The bride typically makes a new dress for the wedding, which will then serve as her "good" dress for formal occasions after the wedding. Blue is the typical wedding dress color.

A few blocks east of Duval Elementary, Mount Carmel Baptist plans to start a "Saturday Academy" tutoring program in math, reading and writing for elementary schoolchildren from Gardenia Gardens, a subsidized housing community the church owns. Congregation member Catherine Mickle, a retired teacher who spent 26 years working in the school district, came up with the idea because she felt the experience of the many retired teachers in the congregation could benefit the children. Mount Carmel pastor LaMonte Newsome said he is hopeful the tutoring program will be a springboard to turning the church into the sort of weekend haven Obama is seeking. "That is the vision," he said. "We start with this, but this is a place on Saturday where kids could be ... kind of a hub of activity for the kids."
