For example, “The welfare of all children has always been of utmost importance to me: the abused, the handicapped, the underprivileged, the ill. I can identify them because I know what it is like not to be able to communicate one’s pain and hope” (Klein 250). To Gerda, helping one certain group of people is not enough. She extends her reach to everyone, and this shows her belief. Gerda’s belief in faith in humanity is that people need to lead richer lives by helping those who have nothing.
She helped the poorest people of Calcutta. She would help give them food and take care of them out of her own pocket. She started a school of herself and taught the children herself eventually volunteers came to help with the school. She also started getting help financially from the Pope and other communities. There are plenty of different views on what the poor should deserve or be privileged with. Some believe they should not be privileged with “food stamps” or other opportunities to help them out. Jane Addams, as a reformer who’s always aiming to establish the freedom and the rights for labor and social worker classes, spent whole life to work for people. As a woman always put her efforts to work for peace and bring peace to others, she awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1931 as a reward that her efforts had been recognized and demonstrating by others. The influence that Jane Addams had made to society was unforgettable. The impacts that she made had changed the minds and the direction of society towards women and African-American.
Through perseverance and a passion for her work, Addams was able to typify image of a progressive reformer as well as achieve her goals like help immigrants learn English and American culture, and to support families that were struggling both physically and mentally. But this was no easy feat as the young woman had to face many obstacles and stay strong to build the settlement house known as Hull House. Progressive reformers pursued for a solution to the problems created by industrialization and urbanization. The reformers wanted to protect working people, and close the gap between social classes. Their main focus was education, as well as focus on family and women’s suffrage.
