In the 20th century, women in most nations won the right to vote, this in return increased their educational and job opportunities. Which is a good thing compared to tests that were done in the 1960s that showed that women’s scholastic achievement were higher in early grades than in high school because the teachers and families of girls did not expect them to peruse anything but being a wife and mother (wic.org). I would say that that we have come a long way from the early 20th century. Women in positions of power or women who want to work their way to a position of power still tend to have a glass ceiling over them. This is because history tells us that men hold these types of positions women are gaining and proving that they can do just as well as a man in a position of power.
As time went on working women included not only single white women it also included married woman. However, immigrants mostly were employed in low paying factory jobs and black women were mostly confined to domestic jobs and picking cotton (734). The white middle class women were able to find better office type jobs and some were even able to be lawyers, doctors and journalists. Feminism was a new term entering the vocabulary of many during the progressive era. Feminism had a slightly different meaning to many at the time but the general consensus was women needed, wanted and deserved “freedom”.
The employees may feel a certain way about the layoff of the co-workers and also it may effect how they work. Also another thing is the loss of valuable and knowledgeable employees may affect others too. The new hire people will have no one to ask if they do not understand or know how to perform a task asked of them. This can cause serious problems for productivity and for the patients at the clinic. The last disadvantage I think will be a problem to the Dodge Clinic is employees seeking employment elsewhere because they do not feel there job is secure.
However, some women joined the work force and would do jobs that men previously had held. Some were not forced to, but they had to work as hard as they could to support their families during this difficult time. In contrast, the writer Norman Cousins commented that there was a negative opinion on the women’s presence in the workforce despite women willing to acquire a living wage. He also stated in his book that the federal government proscribed holding government jobs by both members of a married couple, and many localities stopped hiring women whose husbands with a minimum wage (Cousins 1939). Another aspect of the Depression affecting life of women was the moral argument against working-women.

Some of the campaign encouraging women to return there jobs went to far for example “Leave it to Beaver” and “Father Knows Best”. Women’s rights changed but not as much as they wanted them to, as they wanted the same opportunities as the men were receiving. Women were increasingly unhappy with the burdens and the contradictions they faced. The were bombarded with the cultural message that said that good mothers and wives didn’t work and dedicated their lives to supporting their husbands and children, but at the same time they were increasingly forced to work to make ends
Since the country did not intend to enter the war the army had a relatively small amount of solders which had to be increased primarily by drafting. Subsequently, the population of men in the country decreased greatly, so the role of women in America increased and became more important. Before this point the woman’s main job was to be a house wife; cook, clean, raise the kids, but once the men were gone they were needed to take the position that some men had left behind. This idea was not popular with women at first. Women were not eager to leave their children and their way of life to start working.
Jennifer runs a tight ship and work, and she is organized enough to prepare lists, so the work is done right. I believe it takes a strong woman with a good self-concept to be an administrative assistant, and take care of an entire family, but I also believe stress is taking a toll on Jennifer’s body and her mind. I find it hard commuting back and forth to work, so I understand Jennifer has severe frustrations. Maybe Jennifer believes she has to do everything for everyone for people to love her, because everyone probably can’t believe how much she can do in one day. They might even call her “Superwoman”, but that is just a television show, and not reality.
A raise in the minimum wage gap would inadvertently help everyone, while still deliberately aiding in the step for equality in the workplace. Although leaders of the country are maneuvering us in that direction, without women to make their viewpoints assertive to the supremacist of this country, they will always view the silence as ambivalence for
They are able to advocate and promote women rights, or even speak up for women who were abused and put a stop to it. For example, discrimination and sexual harassment of women in the office will be tackled and stopped. They will also not feel restricted because of their gender, and feel intrinsic satisfaction when working. Gender discrimination will also be reduced due to the increase in gender equality in the society, reducing prejudice against women. Thirdly, their standard of living will increase.
One of the reasons women are leaving their careers is because of the inflexible scheduling for the working women who are also mothers, making it impossible for some to manage both. The questions I have regarding this is that if the workforce was in some way more flexible for the working mothers, would they still be considered equal among the men? Would men see weakness among a woman if she has to be given a little more slack at work because she has children at home? Or could men see it as unequal and unfair that they do not have the option to minimize their work load for the same title and pay as his female co-worker? The thing is, working women risk losing respect from men if they can’t “do it all”, all the time, without complaining.
