Report Final Mooney M20 When I look at the Mooney M20 I am amazed by the specifications of the plane. The first thing I notice was the tail wing with its forward sloping trailing edge and vertical leading edge. In the past, I never paid attention to airplane details until I came to this school. Mooney’s tail wing is extremely tall and noticeable immediately at first glance. Further examination of the plane you can find more and more specifications that are only unique to the Mooney. Looking from the outside the cockpit is very unique because it appears compact but in actuality it is very spacious once you are inside the cockpit, which is an important feature. I feel like if Mooney made a car it would be just as popular as the Mercedes- Benz or Porsche. From what I have read, the theory about the tail design positions the rudder directly in-line with the airflow at slow speeds and high nose altitudes. This is making the rudder more effective when landing or approaching a stall. The tail design greatly helps reduce the chance of an accident. The Mooney wing is also a unique design in the detail it’s made very strong for a one-piece and also has a single spar from wingtip to wingtip. The flaps are also stretched out over almost two thirds of the wing, while the ailerons are short and wide and extend to the tip of the wing. All in all the combinations are designed to give better control at slow speeds. Also interesting point is, the fuselage can be removed and the wing rolled around on the wheels. Something you don’t see on every airplane is the fuselage attached to the wing, which is an equally strong fuselage. Rather than being the usual monocoque, Mooney has added their personal spin to it by putting a welded steel tubular frame with non-structural aluminum as the base for the fuselage. The steel frame also acts as a roll cage
