He has the money to help support the purchase of the farm. “Maybe if I give you guys my money, you’ll let me hoe in the garden even after I ain’t no good at it” (60). He hopes for Lennie and George to let him work with them even if he gets too old. Candy trusts George and Lennie to let him work for them. Candy is miserable at the farm where he works until he met George and Lennie.
In the end, however, it is seen in both novels that when you let yourself succumb to poor moral judgement, you will certainly be doomed. Monetary values and poor moral judgement leads to corruption in both The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and Macbeth. Money and social recognition prove their infectious, harmful nature in both novels. Duddy places a large importance on money for his entire life. His core belief throughout his whole life is “A man without land is nothing (2)”.
To what extent do you agree that Chaucer presents the Pardoner as sinful as the other characters? Some may assume that the Pardoner was presented by Chaucer as one of the most sinful characters in this Tale. The character of the Pardoner is a self-proclaimed fraud, and slyly tricks people out of their money for a living. At the beginning of The Pardoner’s Prologue, The Pardoner indirectly admits to his crime, “…Ycrammed ful of cloutes an bones- Relikes been they, as wenen they echoon.” This suggests that the relics that The Pardoner sells to people do not belong to a real Saint. Chaucer uses The Pardoner’s character as a voice to reveal how corrupt the Catholic Church was in his time.
The Devil which is a parallel to money is a motif so people such that in Tom's position, will borrow money from him. The Devil has essentially converted Tom into his spawn, as he is doing the same thing the Devil once did to him. The greed and money ultimately resulted in his death, and Tom's userer subjects led the end of their lives because of the debt they had to pay. The subjects indulged in the thought of free money, easily accessible money, ruining their lives, which is what the 'Devil' quiescently did to Tom Walker. This quote portrays the greed contained in people, "He was on the point of foreclosing a mortgage, by which he would complete the ruin of an unlucky land-speculator for whom he had professed the greatest friendship."
There is a saying, “Money is the root of all evil.” This is true if the money is obtained through ill-gotten ways. What happened to Tom Walker is symbolic of what can happen to any human consumed by greed. He or she will lose their soul to the obsession. There were many important themes present in this story that relate to choices we make and the consequences that comes with it. Money and material things do not truly satisfy a person's life or make a person happy.

Scott’s film Blade Runner on the other hand, extrapolates the same negative stance towards Man’s hubris in a different context, one shaped by materialistic ethos.
