How accurate is it to say that Eisenhower and Kennedy must share responsibility for the escalation of US involvement in south-east Asia in the years 1954-63? Throughout their history the Vietnamese people suffered foreign interference and conquest. This began with the early French interest in the 17th century and by the late 19th century France had conquered Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, which were collectively known as French Indo-China. This French capture was highly supported by the US government. Harry Truman is an important figure in relation to Vietnam as it was him who made the decision to oppose communism throughout the world.
Imperialism began in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century’s affecting many countries, for example, China, India, Africa, and South America were all affected by imperialism. Although the New Imperialism resulted from industrialized nations seeking control of foreign territories, the conditions that motivated and fueled the great expansion for industrialized nations were mostly based on economic motives. As Europe gained significant power strongly centered nation states emerged. Several factors contributed to the Europeans conquest of Africa. One staggering advantage was Europeans technological superiority.
Japan wanted to acquire their oil and other resources from Indochina (peninsula containing Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam.) The US threatened Japan to withdraw from Indochina, but the Japanese felt they had no choice. Japan did not want to withdraw from Indochina, and with the US, Britain and Netherlands freezing their assets, Japan felt there was no choice but war. To understand why Japan decided to start a war we need to understand the events that led up to the Pearl Harbor attack. It began with Japan’s desire for growth that brought them into conflict with the colonial powers.
One of the main reason's why Eisenhower decided to increase the involvement of the US in South east Asia was because France was threatening that if he did not send more troops to support the French in Dien Bien then French troops would pull out of indo china. If the French were to pull out of indo china, this would have resulted in the loss of a crucial ally in fighting communism for the US, and so this was one of the main reasons why Eisenhower increase US involvement in south east Asia in the years 1954-1963. However Kennedy holds far more responsibility for the escalation of the US involvement in South east Asia, as even though Eisenhower increased the number of US personnel in south east Asia, Kennedy dramatically increase the number, as in December 1962 there were 11,300 US military personnel stationed in south Vietnam. The aim of
Imperialism can also be known as colonialism. Basically all imperialism is, is the growing and expanding of a nation through gaining colonies and territories that will be able to help the country by providing not only the land, labor, and raw materials, but also by providing possible sea ports in a time of war or conflict, and gaining trading routes that help to provide easy transport of goods and materials by avoiding countries or peoples that may cause trouble for the traders travelling through(1). There were many reasons why a nation would become imperialistic. Economics played a very large role in a countries decision to become imperialistic. Many times imperialism occurred in a nation shortly after it had begun to
American Imperialism in the Nineteenth Century Imperialism was a highly controversial subject in the Nineteenth century. Many people opposed the fact while others wanted to hit it full force. Imperialism is the acquisition of control over the government and the economy of another nation, usually by conquest [ (Davidson, 2008) ]. The United State became an imperialistic world power in the late nineteenth century by gaining control over the Hawaiian Islands and, after the Spanish American War, Guam, the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico [ (Davidson, 2008) ]. With America wanting to be a power house country, they became just that when they gained control over these countries.
The root of this decision lies in the pirate activity of the four African Barbary states (Document D). When Tripoli demanded the US buy protection in order to stop the naval harassment, Jefferson refused, negating the views of other Federalists who would have done differently. Tripoli declared war on the United States, and Jefferson was forced to augment the size of the navy in order to defeat the Barbary pirates. The Louisiana Purchase is another course of action taken by Jefferson known for contradicting his strict constructionist views. Neglecting the fact that there is no clause in the Constitution permitting him to purchase land, Jefferson used Napoleon’s European conquest to help him get rid of New World worries.
Causes of French Military Defeat The first Indochina war fought between the French and Vietminh ultimately cumulated to Vietminh victory. However several important factors led to their success. These include the misjudgment of the political situation in Indochina and her surrounding neighbors before and during the conflict; the tactical and strategic miscalculations that the French made; and also the support or lack thereof present within Indochina, France and the allies of both nations. The complicated political allegiances of countries in Indochina and their people were not taken into greater consideration amongst the French. The Cambodian Democrat party, supporting the independence movement gained a majority in their elections, whilst the Laotian King still supported the French; nationalist groups soon divided the country along with French garrison and Vietminh.
France wasn’t part of the colonies like America was, America was sick of being treated badly, and unfairly so they decided to fight. But as for France they were having trouble with their government and needed to create a new one witch they did. And to me it seems like America had much more at stake. The American and French Revolution both worked out in favor of France and for America they both got what they wanted France got the government they fought for, and America parted ways with Britain. The two revolutions were a big part in both America’s history, and a big part in Frances history.
The utmost definition is that it is the process a given society or culture is introduced into the modern world system through various ways. This is usually a result of globalization by a dominating stratum. According to Tomlinson (2004), the term has no exact definition, but he defines it as the use of both economic and political power to exalt and spread the habits and values of a different foreign culture at the expense of a native culture. John Tomlinson, the author of the book and topic entitled "Cultural Imperialism," is one of the prominent theorists of cultural imperialism. In this significant topic, John Tomlinson deals with several issues that range from the ideological impacts of imported cultural stuff, to the cultural homogenization process, and also to the cultural autonomy nature.
