Is the Modern World Making People Sick? : A look at Health Complaints in a Modern World. Summary “Do Healthy People Worry? Modern Health Worries, Subjective Health Complaints, Perceived Health, and Health Care Utilization” (Kelly B. Filipkowski, Joshua M. Smith, Abraham M. Rutchick, Alecia M. Santuzzi, Meera Adya, Keith J. Petrie, Ad A. Kaptein 2009) studied 432 University students and their perceptions of health. Participants filled out questionnaires regarding their subjective health complaints, modern health worries; use of health care and medications, and their perception of current health. Filipkowski made three following predictions: 1. Modern health worries will be related to visits to a health care provider, perceptions of current health, and medication use. 2. Subjective health complaints will mediate the relationships between modern health worries and each of the aforementioned health outcomes (e.g., health care visits, perceptions of health, and medication use 3. Negative affect is expected to mediate the relationship between modern health worries and subjective health complaints. (Filipkowski, et al. 2009) Results showed modern health worries were only slightly related to a rise in health care visits while having a significant impact on their perception of poor health; the more modern health worries they had, the poorer they believed their health to be. Medication use however, was inversely affected; more modern health resulted in less consumption of medications. Modern health worries had a significant impact on subjective health complaints; more modern health worries increased perceived subjective health complaints.
