Firstly, whether a family live in a symmetrical family or not will have an effect on the divisions of labour. March of Progress theorists (Liberal Feminists) such as Young and Willmott argue that family life is gradually improving for all its members, becoming more equal and democratic. For example, women now go out to work, just as men now help with housework and childcare. However Radical Feminists reject the ‘March of Progress’ theory, and argue that women remain unequal within the family. Anne Oakley argues that we still live in a patriarchal (male dominated) society, and therefore women occupy a subordinate and dependant role within the family and wider society.

A symmetrical family is a family where ale the chores are shared equally between couples. Sociologists like Sullivan give reasons for a symmetrical family. An example of this is that there are more women working and that they are bringing in more money to help ensure that help can be hired, eg cleaners. Another example is commercialisation of housework, eg more ready meals, microwaves and washing machines mean that men do not mind doing these chores because they do not have to spend too much time on these tasks. Another example is the shifting social attitudes which mean that it is more accepted in society for men to do housework.
Elizabeth Bott conducted a lot of research into conjugal roles and came up with the term ‘joint conjugal role’ which means that the couple share the housework and the childcare. This type of relationship has become much more common since the 1970’s, this suggests that there is more equality between men and women in domestic labour and gender roles. To what extent did women’s lives change 1850-1901? Women’s lives may not have changed a great deal between the years 1850 and 1901 but the changes that did occur did have an impact on women’s lives. Though there may have been some much bigger changes that came after this time period, it was the changes that happened in these years that kick started the change for women politically and socially. In 1850 women’s roles within society were extremely restricted and they had very limited opportunities. Women were expected to marry, have children and financially they were expected to be fully dependent on their husbands.
Our roles have been to become more equal through various means and matters. In today's society men may help with house work and women are having full time careers to help support their families. There is less of an idea that men are the only bread winner in the house hold, as well as women tending to only house hold matters. Now the two roles are more shared. Women are now accepted into traditionally labeled male occupations, and men are being more accepted in traditional female roles.
Back on those day education for women was very limited and had we attended school back in those days we would probably end up learning about cooking, cleaning, and about how to please and cater to your husband's needs when you got married, as well as take care of children. Young girls didn't have the choice to get an education, and only a few girls could go to school, because usually their family could only afford to send one child to school, and the boy would be their first pick. Girls have a chance to go to university now and get a good, well-paying job. Back in the 1920's and the 1930's, women usually just skipped university after high school and began working, doing a 'female job', once they were done. These days in school we learn about important things, and girls can get the education that they need to have a good
Jenna’s mother and her get into arguments over Jenna asking her mother to watch her son. Jenna has to pay for daycare after school for him while she is at work and has little money to pay for additional daycare when she would be at college classes. Her mother says that she has raised her children and does not believe that she should have to help her daughter because she received no help with her children. Jenna has a 17 year old sister who does help with watching her son, but Jenna also feels guilty always having to ask her and has no money to pay her to watch her son. Jenna and her sister are close, her sister plans on attending college at the end of her senior year and wants to study to become a doctor.
Living on a single income, with the husband supporting the family on his own sounds wonderful to a lot of women today, when husbands demand their wives work outside of the home. The "Women's Libbers" expect to be thanked, and do not understand why many women resent what they did. Society has changed so much that women may make quite a bit more money than men, and some husbands don't want to work at all. Thankfully this country is not like that, anymore. There once was a time where women where treated differently, just because they where women. With time and a lot of hard work of some dedicated women, things did change. While women once had few life options beyond isolation in the domestic sphere, some historical developments presented new opportunities for women in society such as their duties, education, work, voice and even dress.
