The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world since 2000, and 52% are parents. My research has also shown me that women have a more intense drug use than men. Between the last 30 or so and now, the number of imprisonments has risen by 500%. In conclusion, the prison system strips women of their parental power, their no concerns of the well-being of their children and the desire for mothers to reunite. As a result, women in prison have difficulties receiving visits and they are also more likely to have their parental rights terminated during incarceration.
Fenjy Duval Not only do we wage wars with other countries against money, allegedly the same things can be found happening with genders. The infamous gender wage gap, although precedent throughout all time, our era of revelations has pin pointed more focus on it than ever before. The gender wage gap has increasingly improved throughout time, yet the numbers are still quite staggering. Katie Johnston, staff member at the Boston Globe, writes, “Hispanic women who clean offices and houses for a living make just 54 cents on the dollar compared with what male janitors make. Compared with their Hispanic male counterparts, Latina cleaners make just 59 percent.” This instance is only one of many that occur throughout all tiers of the economic agenda.
Domestic Violence is not random but follows particular social patterns and these patterns have social causes. For example, the most striking pattern was found by Coleman et al (2007), who said that Domestic Violence mainly occurs through men being violent to women, she found that women were more likely than men to have experienced ‘intimate Violence’ across all four types of abuse, - partner abuse, family abuse, sexual assault and stalking. Statistics by Mirrlees – Black show that 99% of Domestic Violence cases against women were committed by men. She also found out that 1 in 4 women have been assaulted by a partner at some time in her life, and 1 in 8 women, repeatedly so. This is also
Women are considered second class citizens and have to serve their husbands and male children. Thankfully, female circumcision is something that has not been practiced in the world I grew up, but between 100 million and 140 million females have been circumcised worldwide in the name of Allah (Henslin, 289).Yet, female circumcision is not the only crime that has been committed in the name of God. Thousands of women are killed through lapidation and many become victims of honor killings that are done in order to restore the family’s reputation as being faithful. I believe that all the inequality, discrimination, abuse and violence that occur in Muslim countries and within families are not caused by the religion itself but by people interpreting religious scripture to their benefit and advantage. Furthermore, Islam being the youngest religion of the three religions discussed in the book, Christianity and Judaism had more time to grow and evolve and become more civilized religions.
Susan B. Anthony also opposed abortion, which she saw as another instance of a "double standard" imposed upon women. In the nineteenth century, the decision to undergo an abortion was very often decided by men. There were none of the standard contraceptive options available to women today. Antibiotics had yet to be invented, and abortion was a life threatening and unsanitary procedure for the woman. Anthony wrote that "when a woman destroys the life of her unborn child, it is a sign that, by education or circumstances, she has been greatly wronged,” Susan B. Anthony encouraged women to register to vote and then vote, using the Fourteenth Amendment as justification.
I can also see that when she was raped, it was not a morally good act so the decision to pass the first step would be a little more complicated than what it seems. I believe that this case however would not pass the “the good must come from the direct action, the bad from the indirect” rule. Even though we know she is a rape victim who became pregnant because of that incident, it would still directly harm the fetus. The woman might benefit from the abortion in more than one way, but her decision would kill the fetus and would not pass the second
In 1991 Congress reported that 200,000 women soldiers were victims of sexual assault so far in the US Army. Even though women are more commonly victims of sexual assault, men are also victims. An act of sexual assault is a crime and should be dealt with properly. These statistics and reports show the scale of the phenomenon that is happening in the military. This issue has been going on for decades but no formal severe actions have been taken until now.
Timothy J Gallant HUS318/SSC318: Adolescence, Sub Abuse & Crimi (Summer 2013) Women Behind Bars Silja J.A. Talvi UMA Campus 7/1/2013 The book influenced my opinion on women in prison because; I learned that the incarceration of at risk women does nothing to help them but does everything to help damage our American society and infrastructure. It should be a matter of great concern that almost two and a half million children have a parent in prison. This confounding statistic points to a growing normalization of correctional supervision and the forced dependency it perpetuates. Moreover, these children are set up for failure because of the denied access to federal benefits many of their mothers will incur due to the
Argument Essay Sara M. Linert Grand Canyon University English Composition II November 28, 2010 Sex Trafficking seems to be increasing in the United States. I am 100% against the trafficking of any human being regardless of age or sex. The United States government estimates that 50,000 women and children are trafficked into the United States with most being transported from Asia, Latin America, Russia, and the New Independent States. Being a mother of two this issue really concerns me and touches my heart. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering these young girls and women dealt with during this horrible experience and how they even recover and live a normal life afterward.
According to Bindel (2010) women and girls all over the world are being beaten by their husbands, raped, burned and mutilated in the name of "tradition", forced into marriage, sold into prostitution and murdered for transgressing a twisted code of "honor". Violence against women is an international epidemic. It has been identified by the World Health Organization as a grave health issue, affecting more people than .HIV and Aids. Also, Bindel (2010) states that in most countries, women have won the right to vote only within the past 50 years. There is still nowhere in the world where women have access to political or social power equal to that of men.
