Alexander Holt Model UN Position Paper: Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Bolivia has made great strides toward gender equality throughout the country, but as great progress has been made, some area’s still need attention. According to the Global Gender Gap Report from the World Economic Forum Bolivia scored a 1.01 in enrollment in primary education meaning more women partake in primary education then men. These reports are scored from zero to one, zero being inequality and one being equality. Bolivia also had a literacy rate of .91 of women to men and a secondary education rate of 1.00. This numbers are extremely positive but even though are country makes great strides in education many women still suffer. Violence against women account for more than half of all assault cases in Bolivia, furthermore 50 percent of Bolivia women are believed to have suffered physical, psychological or sexual violence at the hands of their partners at some time in their lives; nine out of ten women are thought to have suffered from violence in general, compared to only one man in ten according to the Social Institutions and Gender Index. Women face many issues, but a new problem is arising in Bolivia, the public has turned to attacking female members of government. There have been over 200 hundred instances of violence towards women in political office. For example one councilwoman was attacked which caused her to miscarriage, another was beaten to an inch of her life and one municipal officer was raped. These instances of violence must be erased so Bolivia can step forward to an age where sex does not stop you from gaining a better position in life. The Delegate of Bolivia feels the first step in ending gender equality is education. Bolivia faces the issue of having a long history of a patriarchal run society.
