Alas, near the end of those two hundred and fifty years there a spark of hope for those who were being kept as slaves in the United States of America. They might not have known it at the time, but today we know that spark of hope and catalyst of freedom for the slaves as “The Abolitionist Movement”. First we should mention a quick history of slavery in the United States. In the first English colonies that settled here in America (around 1619), the first Africans arrived not as slaves, but as indentured servants who were agreed to be set free agree only after completing the terms of the contract. Sadly it is here where things went wrong, and the ugly side of human nature reared its face.

What Role Did Compromise Play In Delaying The Civil War. Compromises were a way to stop or slow the spread of slavery to the northern states and to the territories to the west. It also was keeping the nation united by trying to give everyone something that they wanted. As of 1850 there were an equal number of free states and slave states. As territories were considered for statehood, the government wanted to be sure that there was an equal number of free and slave states admitted.
Why did the opposition to the abolition movement fail? The aim of the abolition movement was to persuade the public and the government to end Slave trade, and later on Slavery itself. The cotton gin did not only change the output of cotton in the south it also changed the whole entire country. It expanded slavery, created sectional conflict, fueled the American Industrial Revolution, and it also led to the America’s bloodiest war: The American Civil War. By Early 19th century cotton became King in United States, and slave labor was in critical demand. By 1790 slavery was a declining institution, in 1790 there are only about seven hundred thousands of slaves in United States, but in 1860 right before the out break of the American Civil War there are approximate four million slaves in United States. Keep in mind that we are only looking at the voyages that brought back slaves to Mainland North America during the last portion of the legal international trade. A possible reason for the steady popularity of certain regions such as the Gold Coast and Sierra Leone could be because of consistency of “product”. This would be especially important during this time period since the international trade of slaves was coming to a close in North America. With the trade coming to a close it might be safer to visit regions that consistently had a good amount of slaves to buy instead of risking visiting somewhere else first and wasting precious time. The international trade of slaves was prohibited from 1808 but the internal trade of slaves carried on for years to come.

After the civil War was over and the slaves were freed, the south enacted The Black Codes to keep African
If you heard the word Black Codes, what would come to your mind? What comes to my mind is restrictions. Restrictions on rights or freedom for the black citizens of the United States after the Civil War. But what makes these codes so controversial? Well the 14th amendment was supposed to “free” the slaves.
