Miss Brill vs. Romero Estrado

It is safe to say that Miss Brill and Romero Estrado have many similarities even though they seem two totally different people. Throughout the two stories Miss Brill, written by Katherine Mansfield and El Tonto del Barrio, written by Jose Armas, the characters both have a love for what they do around their communities. They both at some point become quite crazy and not in the right state of mind. Also, they both have their own specific routines in lives. Miss Brill every single Sunday goes down to the main park in her community to people watch. She Is just simply amazed at all the people and everything that is going on around her. Miss Brill described her Sundays by stating “Oh, how fascinating it was! How she enjoyed it! How she loved sitting here, watching it all! It was like a play. It was exactly like a play”(pg.57). Miss Brill loves the people of the community and is a typical old lady who just sits back and enjoys the show all for her happiness. Romero Estrado enjoys what he does a little differently than Miss Brill. Everyday every week Romero will take his broom and sweep the sidewalks in front of the businesses in town while also taking out any trash and disposing of wastes. He doesn’t even get paid for what he does for the community. He was happy as could be and was always singing and whistling to his own music. As written “But that didn’t seem to bother either Romero or anyone else in the Golden Heights Centro where he lived. Not even the kids made fun of him. It just was not permitted” (pg. 91). Romero went about his business enjoying himself cleaning the town while creating silly sounding music. Just like Miss Brill, he enjoys what he does every day. Miss Brill is a slightly crazy woman. She is all on her own and has no family. Throughout the story the reader begins to understand Miss Brill is an older woman who too often talks to herself and
