Mineral Makeup A Cosmetic Revolution By Kimberly Wilkins Introduction to Chemistry – 1510 David Reynolds, Instructor Mineral based makeup is a cosmetic market that is booming. No longer are we stuck with greasy, heavy foundations and products full of chemicals that clog our pores and cause irritation to the skin. “The cosmetic industry has developed a makeup that is natural and light that is made from finely ground minerals extracted from the earth.” (Ellis-Christensen) These products are not filled with synthetic materials, fragrances, dyes and preservatives that are in traditional makeup that are deemed as skin irritants by many dermatologist. Mineral makeup is more than just a beauty trend; some women claim mineral makeup is here to stay. The concept of mineral based make up came about in the mid 70’s. The initial idea was to create a foundation or base makeup that eliminated many of the ingredients that is in traditional makeup that irritates and clogs the skin. Traditional foundations were heavy, oily and allergens that were harsher to the skin. “Mineral makeup is manufactured with minerals with are sterilized and pulverized into a very fine powder which is then mixed with a variety of natural inorganic colorings to produce a variety of colors” (Rupkalvis). Mineral based makeup in its purest forms is made up of a mixture of minerals, mostly naturally extracted from the earth. Hence, it is considered by “many professionals to be kinder and healthier for the skin” (Bouchez). It has very few additives and fillers. Some of the elements in mineral makeup are said to have natural anti-inflammatory properties and even sun protection.
